Mechanical relaxation in miscible polymer systems: the glass transition regime in poly(vinylmethylether) (PVME)-cross-polystyrene (PS) semi-interpene…
1990
Abstract Miscible semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPN) of varying composition are prepared by crosslinking polystyrene containing few maleic anhydride groups with a diamine in the presence of linear poly(vinylmethylether) (PVME). The resulting PVME-c-P(ScoMA) semi-IPNs are characterized by their thermal and thermomechanical behaviour. Comparison with the corresponding uncrosslinked material proves that weak crosslinking has a negligible effect on the location of the glass transition as measured by d.s.c. Both the Tg data and the temperatures of the loss modulus maximum E″ (at 1 rad/s) show the same non-linear curved composition dependence. Contrary to this the tan δ maximum var…
Solidification behavior of the theta system 2-propanol/poly(n-butyl methacrylate)
1995
Thermoreversible gelation of the system 2-propanol/poly (n-butyl methacrylate) — as detected by D'SC or dielectric experiments — does not manifest itself in a straightforward manner in the dynamic-mechanical properties. Its occurrence can, however, be seen in many ways: i) For constant composition of the system and a reference temperature lower than Tgel, the storage modulus G′ is larger than the loss modulus G″ in the glass transition zone of the master curve and both vary in an almost parallel manner with the angular frequency ω over almost two decades (whereas this feature is normally found for other gelling systems within the rubber plateau or the flow region). ii) The entanglement mole…
Synthesis, Morphology and Rheological Behavior of Fluoropolymer-Polyacrylate Nanocomposites
2007
Nanocomposite materials composed of a PTFE copolymer core and an acrylic copolymer shell have been prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization. The effect of seed particle number and shell polymer composition on secondary particle nucleation and film formation ability of the dispersions has been studied. While TEM reveals a core-shell structure present in the particles, AFM investigation of the film shows a nearly uniform dispersion of the fluorinated seed particles in a matrix formed by the shell polymer. Rheological measurements show composite behavior of the core-shell latex films, especially at elevated temperatures, and an increase in viscosity and storage modulus when compared with the…

A series of combined main-chain side-group liquid-crystalline polymers was synthesized by melt polycondensation from trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, chloro-1,4-phenylene diacetate and 6-(4-methoxy-4′-biphenylyloxy)hexyl-1,4-phenylene diacetate. These polyesters combine the features of rigid-rod main-chain LC-polymers and of side-group LC-polymers. Polymers with small fractions of mesogenic side-groups (5 and 10 mol-%) have lower melting points than the parent polymer poly(chloro-1,4-phenylene 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) but are still liquid crystalline up to their decomposition at T ≥ 400°C. In polymers with larger fractions of mesogenic side-groups (50 and 100 mol-%) partial isom…
Studies of network organization and dynamics of e-beam crosslinked PVPs: From macro to nano
2012
Abstract In this work the influence of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) concentration in water on the organization and dynamics of the corresponding macro-/nanogel networks has been systematically investigated. Irradiation has been performed at the same irradiation dose (within the sterilization dose range) and dose rate. In the selected irradiation conditions, the transition between macroscopic gelation and micro-/nanogels formation is observed just below the critical overlap concentration (∼1 wt%), whereas the net prevalence of intra-molecular over inter-molecular crosslinking occurs at a lower polymer concentration (below 0.25 wt%). Dynamic–mechanical spectroscopy has been applied as a cl…
The effect of silica nanoparticles on the morphology, mechanical properties and thermal degradation kinetics of PMMA
2012
Abstract Silica–PMMA nanocomposites with different silica quantities were prepared by a melt compounding method. The effect of silica amount, in the range 1–5 wt.%, on the morphology, mechanical properties and thermal degradation kinetics of PMMA was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13 C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 13 C{ 1 H} CP-MAS NMR) and measures of proton spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame ( T 1 ρ ( H )), in the laboratory frame ( T 1 ( H )) a…
Synthesis of reactive hyperbranched and star-like polyethers and their use for toughening of vinylester–urethane hybrid resins
2004
A vinylester – urethane hybrid resin (VEUH) was toughened by adding various vinyl-functionalized branched polyethers in 10 and 20 wt%. Two sets of hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) with different branching density were compared with a set of six-arm star polymers. Besides the architecture, the polymers also varied in their characteristics (molecular mass and mass distribution, vinyl/hydroxy ratio). The morphology of the modified VEUH was studied by dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), transmission (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The toughness was characterized by the fracture energy ðGcÞ determined on compact tension specimens at room temperature. It was established that th…
Mode I fracture toughness behavior of hydro-thermally aged carbon fibre reinforced DGEBA-HHPA-PES systems
2012
In this work the Mode I fracture toughness behavior of unidirectional CFRP laminates is investigated by means of Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests. The composite samples were manufactured by thermal curing after impregnation of a Carbon fabric with a DGEBA epoxy and anhydride HHPA curing agent. One resin batch was also mixed with a PES thermoplastic monomer to enhance the matrix toughness. Two lots of samples, toughened and un-toughened, were then left to soak in hot water to achieve various degrees of aging. The influence of matrix toughening and hydrothermal aging on the delamination behavior of the composite have then been assessed and correlated with characterization data from Dynamic …

A procedure is described for the preparation of a block copolymer with A-B-A sequences in which ω-ω′-dihydroxy-poly-(ethylene glycol) is inserted between two polymeric monoacidic chains of polycaproamide and bonded to them by means of ester links. The resulting material was characterized. The copolymer is isomorphous with the polycaproamide. Thermal treatments induce a crystalline transition γ α as in polycaproamide. The influence of the moisture content on the glass transition temperature and on the storage modulus is discussed. Ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Blockcopolymers mit A-B-A-Sequenzen wird beschrieben. In dem Copolymer ist ω-ω′-Dihydroxy-polyethylenglycol uber Esterbindungen…
Macro-micro relationship in nanostructured functional composites
2012
This paper examines the results of the characterization of two functional composites: Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-Ce:YAG (yttrium aluminium garnet doped with cerium) and PMMA-cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF). The composites were prepared as possible emitters in the fields of lighting thermal sensors. The prepared composites were char- acterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thermogravi- metric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) analyses to study the correlation between micro and macro characteristics. We found that the molecular interactions of the two different fill…
