Physics Principles of the Infrared Thermography and Human Thermoregulation

2016

Although it is easy to capture a thermal image with infrared thermography, it is necessary to have the basic knowledge about how it works and the physical laws relating to it, as well as the radiative characteristics of the different bodies, and how heat is transferred between space and bodies. This knowledge is essential to establishing a logical hypothesis, using the camera rigorously, and interpreting the thermal data correctly. The aim of this chapter is to present the basic physical principles of infrared thermography, heat transfer and human thermoregulation.

AMINOACIDI LIBERI NEL TUMORE DI WALKER E NEGLI ORGANI DEL RATTO PORTATORE

1955

The free amino acids content in the Walker tumour and in some organs (liver, lung and skeletal muscle) of the tumour-bearing rats has been chromatograprically determined at different times after the tumour implantation. The contents were very poor in the first stages of the tumour growth but they largely increased with the tumour growth. In the organs of the tumour-bearing rats the aminoacids contents were considerably modified in comparison with the normal animals.

Proteome Analysis of Colorectal Cancer Cell Line SW480 Released Extracellular Vesicles

2018

The detection and profiling of disease-specific extracellular vesicles (EVs) from body fluids has been challenging research area during recent years. However, the question – can EVs surface proteins be exploited as a credible tool for early cancer diagnosis – is still not answered. Objective of the current study was to find out whether hypoxia induces differences in protein profiles of EVs released from hypoxic human colorectal cancer cells SW480 (EVHyp) and EVs released from these cells grown in normoxic conditions – EVNorm. Obtained results show differences in EVs surface protein samples. Some protein fragments were found only or mostly in EVHyp surface protein samples. Finding of one or …

Water Structure in Proteins in Solid State Studied by Near Infrared Spectroscopy

2017

Water adsorption in proteins is the crucial process of protein folding and structure stabilizing. Adsorption of water on proteins can be evaluated by near-infrared spectroscopy, a useful technique for observing combination frequency of a water molecule. In this work, albumin, lysozyme, and silk, were used as models for α-helix and β-pleated sheet proteins. Their NIR spectra during water adsorption process were measured by using an NIR spectrometer equipped with a transflectance accessory. Moreover, the quantitative adsorption of water was determined by gravimetric technique. The results indicate that, there are five different NIR absorptions arise from the OH combination frequencies of wate…

A versatile bioreactor for dynamic suspension cell culture. Application to the culture of cancer cell spheroids.

2016

A versatile bioreactor suitable for dynamic suspension cell culture under tunable shear stress conditions has been developed and preliminarily tested culturing cancer cell spheroids. By adopting simple technological solutions and avoiding rotating components, the bioreactor exploits the laminar hydrodynamics establishing within the culture chamber enabling dynamic cell suspension in an environment favourable to mass transport, under a wide range of tunable shear stress conditions. The design phase of the device has been supported by multiphysics modelling and has provided a comprehensive analysis of the operating principles of the bioreactor. Moreover, an explanatory example is herein prese…

Human Achilles tendon glycation and function in diabetes

2016

Diabetic patients have an increased risk of foot ulcers, and glycation of collagen may increase tissue stiffness. We hypothesized that the level of glycemic control (glycation) may affect Achilles tendon stiffness, which can influence gait pattern. We therefore investigated the relationship between collagen glycation, Achilles tendon stiffness parameters, and plantar pressure in poorly ( n = 22) and well ( n = 22) controlled diabetic patients, including healthy age-matched (45–70 yr) controls ( n = 11). There were no differences in any of the outcome parameters (collagen cross-linking or tendon stiffness) between patients with well-controlled and poorly controlled diabetes. The overall effe…

More Severe COVID-19 in Patients With Active Cancer: Results of a Multicenter Cohort Study

2021

BackgroundThe aim of the study was to compare coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity presentation between oncologic and non-oncologic patients and to evaluate the impact of cancer type and stage on COVID-19 course.MethodsWe performed a multicentre, retrospective study involving 13 COVID-19 Units in Campania region from February to May 2020. We defined as severe COVID-19 presentation the cases that required mechanical ventilation and/or admission to Intensive Care Units (ICU) and/or in case of death.ResultsWe enrolled 371 COVID-19 patients, of whom 34 (9.2%) had a history or a diagnosis of cancer (24 solid, 6 onco-hematological). Oncologic patients were older (p<0.001), had more…

Thermal stability of nacre proteins of the polynesian pearl oyster: a proteomic study.

2015

Mollusc shells are organic-inorganic composites that are often preserved in the fossil record. However, the way the organic fraction, also called shell matrix, gets fossilized remains an unsolved question, in spite of several old and more recent studies. In the present paper, we have tried to mimic a diagenetic process by constantly heating for ten days at 100°C fresh nacre powder samples of the Polynesian pearl oyster Pinctadamargaritifera. Each day, aliquots of nacre powder were sampled and the matrix was subsequently extracted. It was further analysed by direct weigh quantification, by immunological techniques and by proteomics. Our preliminary data suggest that nacre proteins, when heat…

Staining SDS-PAGE gels of skeletal matrices after western blot: a way to improve their sharpness.

2015

7 pages; International audience; Denaturing 1D electrophoresis on acrylamide gels - also referred as SDS-PAGE - is a classical technique for fractionating and visualizing the macromolecular constituents of matrices associated to calcified tissues. This technique has been widely used in association with the subsequent silver nitrate staining. But because matrices associated to calcified tissues are very often glycosylated and constituted of numerous polydisperse macromolecules, the obtained pattern is frequently 'smeary' and discrete bands, when present on the gel, are often blurred, thickened or totally masked by the polydisperse macromolecules. In this paper, we present a simple protocol t…
