Civil Society Participation in Advocating Interests on EU Legislation

The article analyzes the activity of non-governmental actors in Latvia in advocating their interests on national and European Union legislative proposals. The findings draw on primary data gained from 122 responses from interest organizations in Latvia in an online survey. Despite the large number of societal actors (thirteen thousand registered organizations), the interest group population in Latvia consists of small and financially underequipped NGOs. Their lobbying activities are characterized by predominantly influencing domestic authorities, that is, national route strategies, although there is some variation across the types of interest groups.

In this study a robust and sensitive method based on a proposed sample purification procedure, using zirconia-coated Phree™ columns and analysis by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry are presented for the assessment of multi-class antibiotics in farmed fish species. The sample preparation procedure benefited from combined precipitation of proteins and selective removal of phospholipids by Phree™ columns, resulting in a high sensitivity of the method (LOQ 0.3-9mgkg(-1)). We report on a project with a German car manufacturer. The task is to compute (approximate) solutions to a specific large-scale packing problem. Given a polyhedral model of a car trunk, the aim is to pack as many identical boxes of size 4 × 2 × 1 units as possible into the interior of the trunk. This measure is important for car manufacturers, because it is a standard in the European Union.
Modeling the Probability of Informed Trading in the European Carbon Market

We provide evidence of informed trading in the European carbon market. We adapt Easley et al.’s (1996) PIN methodology to the particularities of this market by isolating the trading activity on the two carbon offsets: European Union Allowances (EUAs) and Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). We find that the PIN regularly increases before the publication of the yearly verified-emission reports. CERs exhibit lower average PIN than EUAs. While the PIN of CERs has increased over time, together with its share in total trading activity, EUAs’ PIN has remained pretty stable.
