Abstract This article presents a petrographic comparison of the Rosso Ammonitico facies of Western Sicily and the original Rosso Ammonitico Veronese of Northern Italy based on a total of 27 sections. The Rosso Ammonitico has been the subject of numerous controversies that range from bathyal to shallow-water platform sedimentation. Therefore it seemed interesting to verify if the term Rosso Ammonitico has the same geologic connotation from region to region. A battery of toxicity tests as indicators of decontamination in composting oily waste.

Heterogeneous oily waste from an old dumping site was composted in three windrows constructed from different proportions of waste, sewage sludge, and bark. Genetic methods to improve Cr(VI) bioremediation in groundwater

Cr(VI) contamination of groundwater and soils is a primary public health. Bioremediation is an environmental-friendly alternative for Cr(VI) removal from groundwater and soils, but Cr(VI) toxicity limits the efficiency of the process. We use the genome shuffling technique in order to improve Cr(VI) tolerance and Cr(VI) reduction capability of the strict anaerobic bacterium Geobacter metallireducens. We will investigate the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction in the resulting G. metallireducens mutants through an innovative electrochemical approach. Finally, we will test the best performing mutants in a bench-scale Cr(VI) bioremediation process.

Geobacter metallireducens is known to use oxidized metals such as Fe(III) and Mn(IV) as terminal extracellular electron acceptors. G. metallireducens can reduce the highly soluble and toxic Cr(VI) to its insoluble form Cr(III), thus enabling chromium removal from contaminated water and soil. This process is limited by the low toxicity resistance of G. metallireducens to Cr(VI). Genome shuffling can generate mutants with improved phenotype.
