Plenary talk - non coaxial force and inductance calculations for bitter coils and coils with uniform radial current distributions

Recently the Bessel function approach to calculating the magnetic fields of coils has been used to calculate the mutual inductance and the force between two non coaxial thick cylindrical coils with parallel axes and uniform radial current distributions. This method can also be applied to calculate the force and inductance between an ordinary coil and a Bitter coil, or between two bitter coils, not necessarily coaxial. Bitter coils give a simpler case of the method, and it is possible to solve analytically for the magnetic field of a bitter disk.
Exact solutions for the mutual inductance of circular coils and elliptic coils

An exact solution is presented for the mutual inductance between general noncoaxial thin circular and elliptic coils with parallel axes. The thin coil solution is given as an angular integral of an elliptic integral expression. In addition, for the coaxial case, an exact solution is given for the mutual inductance of a thick circular coil and a thick elliptic coil. The elliptic coil is such that the coil thickness is the same along both elliptic semi-axes. The thick coil solution is given as an integral of an expression involving Bessel and Struve functions. Quantum tomography and nonlocality

We present a tomographic approach to the study of quantum nonlocality in multipartite systems. Bell inequalities for tomograms belonging to a generic tomographic scheme are derived by exploiting tools from convex geometry. Then, possible violations of these inequalities are discussed in specific tomographic realizations providing some explicit examples.
Improvement of the LET sensitivity in ESR dosimetry for -photons and thermal neutrons through gadolinium addition

Abstract We investigated the ESR response of new materials, alanine and ammonium tartrate to which gadolinium was added. The addition of gadolinium enhances sensitivity for Co 60 γ -photons because of its high atomic number ( Z = 64 ) and an enhancement of sensitivity for thermal neutrons because of its high thermal neutron cross section and high linear energy transfer (LET) secondary particles produced after the reaction with neutrons. Monte Carlo dosimetry of the Buchler high dose rate 192Ir source.

In this study a complete set of dosimetric data is presented for the high dose rate (HDR) source from Amersham used in the Buchler remote afterloading HDR unit. These data have been calculated by means of the Monte Carlo simulation code GEANT taking into account the detailed geometry of the source. Absolute dose rate distributions in water were calculated around this source and are presented as conventional 2D Cartesian look-up tables. All dosimetric quantities recommended by the AAPM Task Group 43 report have been calculated. Dosimetric characteristics of backscattered electrons in lead.

In electron beam therapy, tissue overdose due to electrons backscattered from lead has been profusely studied. To quantify this dose enhancement effect, an electron backscatter factor (EBF) was defined as the ratio of dose at the tissue-inhomogeneity interface with and without the scatterer present. The dependence of the EBF on energy at the scatterer surface is not well known for energies lower than 3 MeV which is the most frequent clinical situation. In this work, we have done Monte Carlo calculations with the GEANT code to study EBF in lead at this energy range. Stationary and Pulsating Dissipative Optical Bullets

We demonstrate the existence of stable optical light bullets in nonlinear dissipative media. Beyond the domain where stable bullets are found, unstable bullets show unusual behaviors, like "optical rockets", pulsating solutions or pattern formation.
Sub-kelvin current amplifier using DC-SQUID

Abstract We have set up a system where a low-noise DC-SQUID is used as a current amplifier. The SQUID output is read using a wide band electronics unit based on the noise cancellation scheme. The SQUID has been installed in a compact Nanoway PDR50 dilution refrigerator, and superconducting transitions of Ti/Au thermometer strips for X-ray calorimeter applications have been measured. We can operate at 100 mK using a SQUID with Pd shunt resistors. Noise and bandwidth results of the setup are presented.
