Active compression-decompression resuscitation: a prospective, randomized study in a two-tiered EMS system with physicians in the field.
1996
Improved cardiopulmonary circulation with active compression-decompression cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ACD-CPR) has been demonstrated in studies using different animal models and a small number of humans in cardiac arrest (CA). However, prehospital studies have shown both positive and no extra benefit of ACD-CPR on return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), hospital admission and discharge rates. The aim of our prospective study was to compare standard manual CPR (S-CPR) with ACD-CPR as the initial technique of resuscitating patients with out-of-hospital CA, with respect to survival rates and neurological outcome. Patients with out-of-hospital CA treated by emergency medical services (EMS…
Initial motivation and progress with doctoral studies in computer science — A case study from a Finnish university
2014
Success in doctoral education has been studied from many theoretical and practical perspectives, but very few studies focus specifically on student motivation. In practice, graduate schools usually try to evaluate applicants' motivation in the admission process, assuming they are able to identify the initial motivation that would predict a successful doctoral path. The aim of this study is to bring new understanding to this field by studying the relationship between the students' initial motivation in enrolling doctoral studies and their actual progress with the studies. This is a case study conducted in a Finnish research university with full-time doctoral students in computing. The resear…
Kompetencje menedżerskie w kształtowaniu kompetencji organizacyjnych jednostek ratownictwa medycznego w świetle badań
2019
Assuming that competencies are a multi-dimensional concept, which needs to be approached in an integrated way, we distinguished the following five groups of general competencies in the model of managerial competencies applied to emergency medical teams: leadership, communication and re- lational, professional and social, sectoral, and business competencies with 26 detailed competencies identified within these five groups. The paper was motivated by the intention to examine the current level of managerial competencies of managers running these units and finding out to which extent individual managerial competencies impact organisational competencies of these entities in the area of: marketin…
Erstversorgung durch Rettungsassistenten und Rettungssanitäter bei kombinierten Einsätzen von RTW und NAW in einem stationären NAW-System
2003
OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to evaluate the quality of paramedic care and the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of sending a well-trained paramedic team to the sight of a medical emergency to initiate active medical treatment prior to the arrival of the mobile intensive care unit (MICU). METHODS: We examined 200 cases of medical treatment initiated by paramedics before arrival of the MICU team at the site of the medical emergency. Using a questionnaire, all emergency procedures performed by the paramedic team on scene were recorded and defined as "required", "carried out", and "accurately performed". The documented emergency procedures were divided into three categories: bas…
Multimodal imaging device for skin diagnostics: improvements and tests
2018
In our work we have demonstrated our developed skin diagnostic imaging device and its hardware and software improvements. The device was tested in laboratory, to determine the stability of light uniformity and stability, as well as the performance of data processing. The improvements were focused to fulfill all requirements of doctors-dermatologists who use this device. Results showed that light field uniformity and stability were acceptable to get chromophore concentration maps of skin malformations.
A trust-based security enforcement in disruption-tolerant networks
2017
We propose an approach to enforce security in disruption- and delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) where long delays, high packet drop rates, unavailability of central trusted entity etc. make traditional approaches unfeasible. We use trust model based on subjective logic to continuously evaluate trustworthiness of security credentials issued in distributed manner by network participants to deal with absence of centralised trusted authorities.
Apparent Life-Threatening Events
2018
Objectives Apparent life-threatening event (ALTE) refers to a constellation of unexpected events suddenly occurring in infants that extremely alarm the observers. The objectives of this study were to evaluate 1) intervention of Emergency Service (ES) at home, 2) parental behavior before ES intervention, 3) patients' outcome at follow-up of a minimum of 6 months. Methods Retrospective study of infants younger than 12 months whose parents called ES and were evaluated for ALTE from 2005 to 2014. Tactile stimulation (TS) was defined as any maneuver performed by parents or ES staff aimed at rescuing patients without cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was define…
Face-to-Face with the Doctor Online: Phenomenological Analysis of Patient Experience of Teleconsultation.
2022
The global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic has considerably accelerated the adoption of teleconsultation—a form of consultation between patient and health care professional that occurs via videoconferencing platforms. For this reason, it is important to investigate the way in which this form of interaction modifies the nature of the clinical encounter and the extent to which this modification impacts the healing process. For this purpose, I will refer to insights into the clinical encounter as a face-to-face encounter drawn from the phenomenology of medicine (R. Zaner, K. Toombs, E. Pellegrino). I will also take into account a criticism that has been expressed by various contemporary phenom…
Kids Save Lives – ERC position statement on school children education in CPR.
2016
Sudden out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) with unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the third leading cause of death in industrialised nations.1 After OHCA, the overall survival rates are 2–10%.2–4 In Europe and in the US together, 700,000 people die of OHCA every year. The same applies to other industrialised regions of the world. Many of these lives could be saved if more lay people provided immediate CPR.2 Emergency medical services (EMS) response times can be several (6–12) minutes or even longer.
Economic costs associated with acute attacks and long-term management of hereditary angioedema.
2010
Background Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by recurrent acute attacks of swelling of the larynx, abdomen, and periphery. Objective To assess the economic burden associated with acute attacks and long-term management of HAE. Methods Burden was assessed via a Web-based survey of HAE patients (≥18 years old) that solicited information on attack characterization, short-term treatment, long-term disease management, impact on work, and patient costs. A standardized instrument, the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire, was included to assess impact on work productivity. Standard medical costs and US average wage costs were assigned…
