Ischemic hypoxic encephalopathy: The role of MRI of neonatal injury and medico-legal implication
2021
Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is one of the major causes of neonatal death and neurological disability in the child, and represents the most common birth injury claim. Intrapartum asphyxia often leads to several long-term sequalae, such as cerebral palsy and/or developmental delay, epilepsy. Through the neuroimaging it's possible to identify and define the different lesioned pictures and provide useful elements to establish the moment in which the damage occurred; indeed, timing of injury is a key element in the legal arena. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is emerging as one of the most important tools in identifying the etiologic of neonatal encephalopathy as well as in predicting long-…

Violence against women in heterosexual couples: A review of psychological and medico-legal considerations.

Victims can suffer physical, emotional or mental health problems, and experience detrimental effects in social, psychological and relational health with their families, especially children.
This note proposes a review of Middle-Latin poetic texts of the 11th-13th centuries – in particular the elegiac comedies and the misogynistic compositions – in which the metaphorical, oxymorical and paronomastic opposition "mel" ~ "fel" appears, aimed at stigmatizing the duplicity that often characterizes the behavior of men and, above…
A return to humane medicine: Osler's legacy.
2017
Sir William Osler is celebrated today not only for his contributions to the advancement of medical education, but also for the humanism he brought to the practice of medicine. He was a doctor whose bedside skills and manners were emulated, and can legitimately be called an infectious diseases specialist. Nonetheless, he was also a humanist in the broader sense of the term, a student of human affairs and human nature, who emphasised compassion for the individual. To what extent, if any, are today's challenges influenced by departures from the paradigms created by Osler? In this paper we sought to ascertain whether such a tradition is still relevant to current practice and may foster a new pe…
