"Tea for two": the Archive of the Italian Latinity of the Middle Ages meets the CLARIN infrastructure
2020
This paper aims at showing how integrating the Archive of the Italian Latinity of the Middle Ages (ALIM) into the ILC4CLARIN repository can provide mutual benefits. Making ALIM available to a large community of scholars and researchers, on the one side, represents the first step to reduce the lack of resources for Medieval Latin in CLARIN and, on the other side, constitutes an unprecedented contribution to not only linguistic investigations, but also to the studies of the culture and science at the basis of the Western European society. The paper describes the adopted approach aiming to keep intact the structure of the archive and its metadata, which are both accurately mirrored into the IL…
2011
Hilary of Orléans (about 1075-1140) spent considerable time in Angers between 1105 and 1122-1123. In the cloister of Saint Eutrope he knew the recluse Hervé (who became his friend) and Eve of Wilton (about 1058-1120), an English anchoress whose life was very holy and pious. In his rhythm «Veni, dator omnis boni, veni, Sancte Spiritus», the medieval poet remembers the life and the death of Eve and supplies God, the Holy Mother, the Holy Spirit and all the Saints to take her in Paradise. The composition is full of hymnological and hagiographical themes. This paper presents a strict analysis of the text, with many considerations about rhetorical, stylistic and metric elements which occur in it.

Insurance in Elizabethan England. The London Code
2016
English insurance came into being almost entirely during the Elizabethan period. However, the Great Fire of 1666 consumed most of London's mercantile document, and therefore little is known about early English insurance. Using new archival material, this study provides the first in-depth analysis of early English insurance. It focuses on a crucial yet little-known text, the London Insurance Code of the early 1580s, and shows how London insurance customs were first imported from Italy, then influenced by the Dutch, and finally shaped in a systematic fashion in that Insurance Code. The London Insurance Code was in turn heavily influenced by coeval continental codes. This deep influen…
Through the analysis of the inventories made by the Counts of Caltabellotta during the period from the beginning of the fifteenth to the middle of the sixteenth century and acts…
Recensione a Philip de Slane, Libellus de descriptione Hibernie. Natura, meraviglie e magie dell’Irlanda medievale, a cura di G.P. Maggioni, Firenze,…
2020
History of bioavailable lead and iron in the Greater North Sea and Iceland during the last millennium – A bivalve sclerochronological reconstruction
2014
We present the first annually resolved record of biologically available Pb and Fe in the Greater North Sea and Iceland during 1040-2004 AD based on shells of the long-lived marine bivalve Arctica islandica. The iron content in pre-industrial shells from the North Sea largely remained below the detection limit. Only since 1830, shell Fe levels rose gradually reflecting the combined effect of increased terrestrial runoff of iron-bearing sediments and eutrophication. Although the lead gasoline peak of the 20th century was well recorded by the shells, bivalves that lived during the medieval heyday of metallurgy showed four-fold higher shell Pb levels than modern specimens. Presumably, pre-indus…
