Knowledge engineering and semantic formalism of symbolic relations. From medieval network to web 3.0

2020

A search has always been at the center of human concerns, the one of conditions and means to represent, to control well, and to communicate effectively with his environment. While technological advances and electronic gadgets such as smartphones, the Web, and online social networks currently allow addressing this concern, it has not always been the case. Our works in this thesis treat medieval documents considered as a medium of communication and as a model of the social network in the Middle Ages. These documents are called medieval illuminations. They were luxurious paintings used in that time to represent the environment and ideal world for elites such as prince, duke, etc. Those paintin…

1998

This survey is our modest contribution to the history of a medieval episcopal court. Its objective is to know the people who were the components of the Household, Court and Chancellery of the Valencia diocese Bishop, Hugo de Llupià (1408-1425), through the different posts, trades, servants and "familia" members who performed their duties at the service of the diocese episcopal management as well as at the Bishop himself. To do this study we have made use of five records belonging to the mentioned Bishop which are kept in the Diocesan Archives of Valencia coresponding to the years 1408, 1412, 1418, 1421 and 1425.[fr] Cette étude est une modeste contribution à l’hisioire d'une cour médiévale …

1200-yr high-resolution terrestrial climate archive from the middle of the Mediterranean: The sedimentary record from Lake “Specchio di Venere” on Pa…

2011

The special location of Lake "Specchio di Venere" on Pantelleria Island in the Sicily Channel (Mediterranean Sea) between Tunisia and Sicily offers a unique terrestrial archive recording atmospheric changes, which are otherwise difficult to decipher in the marine records from this area. The lake is an endorheic saline basin with a maximum depth of 12.5 m. As the water input depends on rainfall, precipitation variations influence changes of the lake's water chemistry. In summer 2008, Lake Venere was cored with a modified Livingstone corer revealing a composite sedimentary sequence of 10.29 m length. Two radiocarbon dates form a preliminary age model indicating a very high sedimentation rate …

Making a rural landscape: ecological and human dynamics in the holm oak forest of Mt. Barraù (Corleone, Palermo, C-W Sicily)

2017

The Harvesting Memories Project (funded by Bona Furtuna LLC) aims to investigate the long-term landscape transformations in the central part of the Alto Belice Corleonese (Central-Western Sicily). The case study area is formed by a sequence of gentle hills (Contrade Castro and Giardinello), rich in water springs that offer an optimal condition for agricultural exploitation, irregularly interrupted by the Mt. Barraù (1420 m a.s.l.) with steep and abrupt slopes in the south-west side. The study of this territory is approached by an holistic perspective to detect and evaluate the relationships and the interactions among human activities and the environment. The holm oak forest that covers part…

The tree of life in the southern porch of the cathedral of Palermo: survey and geometric analysis

2016

This study focuses one of the most puzzling works of art made in Palermo at the end of the medieval age: the tree of life, a rich geometrical decoration with animal and human figures in the southern porch of the Cathedral of Palermo. Topographic and SfM photogrammetric methods produced a detailed orthophoto of the porch. Images collected during restoration have been rectified and superimposed to the orthophoto. The geometrical analysis of the decorative patterns reveals a complex design and meaningful links between the decoration and the general architectural layout of the porch.

Many buildings are depicted in the mosaic panels that enrich the churches built in Sici…

ENGLISH: The World Heritage List includes seven Sicilian sites, the last in order of time to berecognized is the ‘Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Chur…
