Diversity in the population of Brassica incana Ten. (Cruciferae) in Sicily
2014
henotipic diversity in Sicilian populations of Brassica incana Ten. (Cruciferae) is here ana- lyzed in comparison with the only one known population of B. raimondoi Sciandrello et al., taxonomic close species recently described from the coastal relief of eastern Sicily. The analysis of diagnostic characters of these two taxa does not reveal significant differences that justify a treatment at species level of the population of B. raimondoi. On this base, the authors deemed to include this taxon in the infraspecific variability of B. incana and consider most appropriate the rank of subspecies. Therefore is here proposed the establishment of the trinomial com- bination B. incana subsp. raimond…
Red list of threatened vascular plants in Italy
2021
Italy has a rich natural heritage, which is dangerously under pressure. In recent years, there is an increased awareness of the crucial role of plants in ecosystem functioning and in providing ecosystem services. Consequently, an updated Red List of the Italian vascular flora was compiled in this work, at the request of the Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection, with the scientific support of the Italian Botanical Society. The IUCN Red List criteria were applied to 2,430 Italian native vascular plant taxa to assess their current extinction risk and to highlight the major threats affecting the Italian flora. Our results revealed that 54 taxa (2.2% of the assessed taxa) are extinc…
Presencia y análisis genético de una tortuga bastarda (Lepidochelys kempii) en el mar Mediterráneo
2003
We report on a juvenile Kemp´s ridley sea turtle, Lepidochelys kempii, captured alive by fishermen in the waters off Alicante (western Mediterranean, Spain) on October 15th 2001. The analysis of a 460 base pair fragment of the mt DNA control region revealed a perfect match with haplotype D previously described in this species. This is the second report of L. kempii in the Mediterranean basin.
Tourism in Mediterranean Islands: a comparative analysis.
2011
This chapter analyses the main dimensions of 24 Mediterranean islands representing seven European countries. It highlights some of the economic barriers to sustainability. Islands are classified by area into large, medium, small and micro, and also by population density- from high to low. The Mediterranean islands represent a wide variety of situations and common problems, and every economic decision has had an immediate impact on the sustainability of the economies of each island.
Tradition and modernity in the mediterranean cities. The tunisian cities: Tunis, Kairouan, Tozeur, Nefta.
2009
Helminth Infection of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta along the Coasts of Sicily and the North West Adriatic Sea
2021
We provide new data on the presence of helminth parasites in 64 individual loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta stranded along the coasts of Sicily and the northwest Adriatic Sea between June 2014 and August 2016. The necropsy examination revealed 31 individuals (48.4%) positive for endoparasites, showing a greater prevalence of trematodes than nematodes. In particular, seven species and a single genus of Trematoda (Hapalotrema) and a single species and genus of Nematoda (Kathlania) were identified. Among the Digenea flukes the species with the highest prevalence of infection were Rhytidodes gelatinosus (34.6%) and Hapalotrema sp. (33.3%), while among the Nematoda they were Kathlania sp. …
Trend analysis of convective and stratiform precipitation over a Mediterranean area
2021
Separating convective and stratiform rainfall is still today an open challenge, especially because of the difficulty in defining a clear distinction between the two rainfall regimes. At the same time, the study of convective rainfall is essential to better understand the dynamics that generate them and the proactive measures that could reduce the risk of important consequences (e.g., human life losses and economic damages). Furthermore, the shadow of a changing climate makes these aspects even more alarming, due to the possibility of an increase in the occurrence of such severe events. Sicily, whose climate could be considered as representative of the central Mediterranean area, has been of…
Submerged macrophytes as key players in aquatic ecosystems under global change: a multiscale experimental approach
2020
The controversial role of actors in Italian and Sicilian waterfront areas management and planning
2013
The paper investigates the relationship between planning tools and formal/informal subjects involved in Sicilian waterfront areas management and it focuses on the relation between port plans and other (local and regional) planning instruments and policies. This relationship is explored through an examination of some results of The “Waterfront” project (Water And Territorial policiEs for integRation oF multisectoRial develOpmeNT), developed under the PO 2007-2013 Italia-Malta, that aimed to explore the field of “waterfront” in a different sense from the simple concept of urban or peri-urban coastal areas. The waterfront, in the Project approach, takes a wider identity that refers to the comp…
