Selenium bio-enrichment of Mediterranean fruit juices through lactic acid fermentation.

2021

Abstract This work was carried out to elaborate selenium (Se) bio-enriched fermented Mediterranean fruit juices. To this purpose, pomegranate and table red grape juices were added with sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and fermented by Levilactobacillus brevis CRL 2051 and Fructobacillus tropaeoli CRL 2034 individually or combined. To better evaluate the effect of selenite addition and starter strain inoculums on the total bacterial community of the fruit juices, fermentation trials were performed with raw and pasteurized fruit juices. No statistical significant differences were observed for total mesophilic microorganisms (TMM) and rod-shaped lactic acid bacteria (LAB) levels among raw and pasteur…

Pleurotus eryngii var. thapsiae var. nov. from Sicily

2002

Field investigation in the Sicilian territory allowed the study of Pleurotus eryngii basidiomata growing in association with Thapsia garganica. The evaluation of morphological, ecological, distribution and isozyme, and PCR-RAPD data together with a revision of Bresadola's herbarium specimens kept in the Herbarium Botanische Staatssamlung (M) led to the description of a new variety, Pleurotus eryngii var. tahpsiae var. nov.

Natural co-occurrence of mycotoxins in wheat grains from Italy and Syria

2014

This article describes the application of an analytical method for the detection of 25 mycotoxins in wheat grain based on simultaneous extraction using matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) followed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry, a hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometer (QTrapÒ). Information Dependent Acquisition (IDA), an extra confirmation tool for samples that contain the target mycotoxins, was used. The analysis of 40 Syrian and 46 Italian wheat grain sam- ples interestingly showed that Syrian samples were mainly contaminated with ochratoxin A and aflatox- ins, whereas Italian samples with deoxynivalenol and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol. Migrant Women-experiences from the Mediterranean Region

2019

Introduction: The phenomenon of migration is characterized and influenced by a number of different variables; and the different stages of journey are related to different levels and types of psychological distress. Women, in particular, are exposed to further specific risks during migration. Aim: To determine the factors that affect the psychological health of migrant women during the different stages of the migration journey. Methods: We provide a narrative review of the literature around the experiences of women during migration process, with a geographical focus on women migrating to the Mediterranean area. Results: Little data is currently available on the burden of mental health disor…

Mapping Seasonal Variability of Buildings Electricity Demand profiles in Mediterranean Small Islands

2023

In communities with a high tourist influx and warm climate, such as Mediterranean small islands, the energy demands for space cooling and domestic hot water are expected to significantly increase during summer. Considering the current energy context, for succeeding energy transition and reducing the dependency on not endogenous fossil fuels, it is paramount to increase the deployment of renewable sources of energy, especially wind and solar which, however, are aleatory and unpredictable. Hence, to reduce the high costs for energy supply in these contexts, the analysis of the variation of energy consumption is fundamental. Moreover, mapping the spatial distribution of energy profiles can be …

PRECIPITATION ESTIMATION THROUGH SATELLITE SYSTEM OVER THE MAJOR MEDITERRANEAN ISLANDS

2017

Reliable and accurate precipitation measurement or estimation is crucial for disaster monitoring and water resource management. Nowadays the scientific community expects significant improvements in precipitation monitoring by the continuous technological evolution of satellite-rainfall estimate systems which are able to produce data with global coverage and thus can provide low-cost information even in scarcely populated areas or places where for economic reasons ground measures are missing. The most recent satellite mission is the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), which is an international constellation of ten partner satellites, and a source of rainfall estimates at high spatial and…

MULTICULTURAL CITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN TERRITORIES: GREEN CITY PALERMO 2019

2014

This contribution aims to examine the territory of Mediterranean cities set against the general topic of the GREEN CITY. Our main research hypothesis will show how multiculturalism, the enhancement cultural heritage and a conscious use of natural resources, are essential factors for a positive change in the development of Mediterranean cities, involving actors, key figures, inhabitants and users. The preservation of multiculturalism comes under the enhancement of intangible cultural heritage of urban community. The enhancement of multiculturalism and of intangible heritage is, in fact, oriented to the preservation of the cultural and linguistic diversities of each ethnic group that takes pa…

Reply to LoganDodge: 'stable isotopes challenge the perception of ocean sunfish Mola mola as obligate jellyfish predators'.

2013

Syvaranta et al. (2012) recently provided stable-isotope data from eight small-bodied ocean sunfish Mola mola (L. 1758) captured from the Italian fishing port of Camogli on the Ligurian coast. Representative data were also given for members of pelagic and neritic–coastal food webs. The level of 13C and 15N enrichment shown by M. mola relative to their putative obligate diet of gelatinous zooplankton (gelata) (based on the locally dominant Pelagia noctiluca and literature data) was used to question their obligate consumption of such prey. Furthermore, the M. mola were isotopically more similar to neritic rather than pelagic fishes captured locally, prompting the suggestion that juvenile M. m…

Absence of spatial genetic structure in common dentex (Dentex dentex Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea as evidenced by nuclear and mitochondri…

2018

International audience; The common dentex, Dentex dentex, is a fish species which inhabits marine environments in the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic regions. This is an important species from an ecological, economic and conservation perspective, however critical information on its population genetic structure is lacking. Most samples were obtained from the Mediterranean Sea (17 sites) with an emphasis around Corsica (5 sites), plus one Atlantic Ocean site. This provided an opportunity to examine genetic structuring at local and broader scales to provide science based data for the management of fishing stocks in the region. Two mitochondrial regions were examined (D-loop and COI) along…
