The Messinian Salinity Crisis in the Mediterranean: an integrated scenario
2004
Development, human impact and habitat distribution in submarine canyons of the Central and Western Mediterranean
2015
We present in this paper different studies on canyon systems, adopting distinct approaches, temporal and spatial scales. Most of our study areas coincide with the NW Sicilian canyons, which present striking differences in their morphologies in response to the Plio-Quaternary tectonic evolution of the northern Sicilian margin. In the present-day, active sedimentary processes inferred from bedform analyses along some of the studied canyons could drive to enhanced biological activities along them. This is also confirmed by an on-going study of the impact of trawling fishery on the morphology and sedimentary environments of the Sicilian margin, where intense deep-sea bottom trawling activities …
Identification and assessment of geosites for territorial enhancement – the study and geoheritage exploitation of the Torre Salsa natural reserve (Si…
2014
The “Ecological Cross-‐border Networks Malta-‐Sicily” (RE.MA.SI.) is an international research project founded by the Italia-‐Malta 2007-‐2013 Programme. A part of the project aims to carry out a multidisciplinary study for the identification and enhancement of geosites in the Maltese Islands and Sicily. Some areas have been picked out; these areas are spectacular and interesting for the tourists and can make a significant contribution to the understanding the geological and geomorphological history. Field surveys took place for the identification and classification of the most significant geomorphosites and the verification of the collected bibliographical data; in particular, the iden…
Bridging Malta and Sicily through geoheritage exploitation: Identification and assessment of geosites for territorial enhancement
2013
Malta and Sicily show common geological and geomorphological features, having been also physically linked not later than the Last Glacial Maximum. At present both islands have a high tourist vocation, but their environmental potential is not fully exploited for attracting tourists and visitors. In the framework of an international research project, “Ecological Cross-border Networks Malta-Sicily” (RE.MA.SI.), a multidisciplinary study for the identification, selection and enhancement of geosites in the Maltese and Sicilian islands was carried out. A number of sites both in Malta and Sicily have been identified and qualitatively and quantitatively assessed applying a methodology already teste…
Climate Change in the Mediterranean Basin (Part I): Induced Alterations on Climate Forcings and Hydrological Processes
2022
In the last years, the Mediterranean basin has been widely recognized as one of the most vulnerable areas in the world to climate change; because of its high concentration of urban and industrial settlements, it is one of the most impacted areas of the world in terms of water scarcity. The present paper aims at reviewing the main observed and predicted effects of climate change on hydrological processes directly related to water availability in the Mediterranean Basin, mainly focusing on the last ten years of research. While an in-depth discussion about possible future water scarcity problem in the Mediterranean area and the sources of uncertainty affecting future climate projections and im…
Daily rainfall statistics in Sicily (1920-2000)
2012
Rainfall characteristics are crucial for vegetation patterns formation and evolution in Mediterranean ecosystems. Changes in rainfall frequency and intensity could cause vegetation water stress for some plant species and benefit, at the same time, other species, driving coexistence and competition dynamics. The changes in the precipitation characteristics are sometimes more important than the changes in the total amount of precipitation in determining the partitioning between green and blue water with several implications for both the vegetation communities health and water resource management. Decreasing rainfall is a clear signature of climate change in Mediterranean countries. Annual and…
Lo sguardo del sacro sul mare - The Sacred overlooks the sea
2015
MULTICULTURAL CITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN TERRITORY. GREEN CITY PALERMO 2019
2013
This contribution aims to examine the territory of Mediterranean cities confronted with the general topic of GREEN CITY. New strategies for urban regeneration, based on the enhancement of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and the acknowledgement of environmental sustainability principles, are the themes that will form the cultural basis for the definition of the hypothesis of candidacy of Palermo for the 2019 European Capital of Culture. Our main research hypothesis will show how multiculturalism, the enhancement cultural heritage and a conscious use of natural resources, are essential factors for a positive change in the development of the Mediterranean cities, involving actors, cr…
6 Projects for the Mediterranean Island of Sicily
2004
TUZZOLINO+MARGAGLIOTTA. PROJECTS
2017
Tuzzolino e A. Margagliotta.
