Cotton is one of the most important industrial crops in the world. Though widely cultivated in Sicily (Italy) in the past, cotton growth on the island has disappeared today due to a complex variety of agronomic, economic and socio-political reasons. In recent years, increased interest in natural fibers worldwide has led to a revival in cotton plants in the Mediterranean area. Marine alien species in Italy: A contribution to the implementation of descriptor D2 of the marine strategy framework directive

A re-examination of marine alien species or Non Indigenous Species (NIS) reported in Italian Seas, until December 2018, is provided, focusing on establishment success, year of first record, origin, potential invasiveness, and likely pathways, in particular. Furthermore, their distribution is assessed according to the marine subregions outlined by the European Union (EU) Marine Strategy Framework Directive: Adriatic Sea (ADRIA), Ionian Sea and Central Mediterranean Sea (CMED), and Western Mediterranean Sea (WMED). International audience; Sessile marine species such as Anthozoans act as ecosystem engineers due to their three-dimensional structure. Gorgonians, in particular, can form dense underwater forests that give shelter to other species increasing local biodiversity. Spanish population trends in Internet searches for information on different diets

Abstract Objective To use Google Trends to explore the trends of interest of the Spanish population regarding information related to different types of diets, focused on those that are popular and with evidence-based studies, over the last 10 years. Kinematics and U-Pb zircon ages of the sole metamorphics of the Marmaris Ophiolite, Lycian Nappes, Southwest Turkey

In the eastern Mediterranean, the Lycian Nappes are found in the structurally uppermost position in the Anatolide-Tauride belt related to the closure of the Neotethys. In Western Turkey, the Marmaris Ophiolite with the metamorphic sole occupies the uppermost tectonic position in the Lycian belt. The metamorphic sole is represented by discontinuous tectonic slices composed of amphibolites, phyllites, micashists and quartzo-feldspathic micaschists. Zircons from the micashists and quartzo-feldspathic micaschists display dark cores and rims. Nutritional assessment of the school menus offered in Spain's Mediterranean area.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to perform a nutritional assessment of the menus served in school canteens and to verify their effects on the nutrition of schoolchildren. Methods We selected three collective catering companies that offered ~53 500 menus/d in 369 schools in Spain's Mediterranean area (Valencian Community). Coffee consumption and total mortality in a Mediterranean prospective cohort

Background The relation of coffee consumption with total mortality is controversial, because the available evidence is still inconsistent. Objective This study aimed to assess this association in a highly educated, middle-aged Mediterranean cohort. Mediterranean diet and sars-cov-2 infection: Is there any association? a proof-of-concept study

The aim of this observational study was investigating the possible correlation between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeD) and SARS-COV-2 infection rates and severity among healthcare professionals (HCPs). An online self-administrated questionnaire (evaluating both MeD adherence and dietary habits) was filled out by HCPs working in Piedmont (Northern Italy) from 15 January to 28 February 2021. Out of the 1206 questionnaires collected, 900 were considered reliable and analyzed.
