Provisional list of succulent species of the Mediterranean Region

1997

Succulent plants are relatively scarce in the Mediterranean Region, and dominant in a few areas. Most species belong to genera of Crassulaceae widespread in the boreal Regions. The main threat for succulents in the area is habitat modification and destruction. Industrial and touristic development, grazing, dams and mining activities are relevant factors of risk, as well as fires and invasive species.

Variazione degli stock di carbonio in seguito ai processi di abbandono dei coltivi: il caso studio dell'isola di Pantelleria (Tp)

2007

The recent abandonment of marginal agricultural areas in the Mediterranean has caused an increase of the surface occupied by pre-forest and forest formations. In order to study the carbon accumulation processes on Pantelleria Island was selected a North-facing area. This area includes 5 stages of succession (sds) that compose a chronosequence (from 0 to 30 years) to understand soil C accumulation processes after abandonment. These are abandoned vineyards or caperbushes, not disturbed (grazing, fire) since agricultural abandonment, and they are situated in thermomediterranean belt and on the same parent material and consequently considered in the same ecological conditions. Samples at 1 cm, …

On Some Morphological Variations of Syncyamus Aequus Lincoln & Hurley, 1981 (Amphipoda, Cyamidae) From the Mediterranean Sea

1988

Synapseudes Shiinoi Riggio, 1973, a Species of Tanaidacea Found in the Mediterranean

1977

During the bionomic survey carried out in the course of 1968 on the biogenic platform bordering the rocky shore of Mount Pellegrino in the Bay of Palermo (northwestern Sicily) some individuals of a species of Synapseudes Miller (1940) were found in samples of Tanaidacea taken during the winter at station no. 1. This find is of considerable interest as no Synapseudes species had hitherto been described from the Mediterranean, although the presence of this genus on the coast of southern France has been mentioned by Bellan-Santini (1962, 1969). Careful examination of the specimens revealed that they belonged to a new species, which was named after Prof. Sueo M. Shiino in gratitude for his kind…

Nutraceuticals and Cardiovascular Disease

2021

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the primary cause of mortality worldwide, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. Among several cardiometabolic risk factors, dyslipidemia, and especially high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, are associated with the development and progression of atherosclerosis and its clinical sequelae. Recent studies have shown promising results for nutraceutical compounds on various CVD risk factors and complications. In addition to looking at individual nutrients or foods, dietary pattern have also emerged as a complementary approach to examine the relationship between the overall diet and the risk for CVD. The Mediterranean Diet (MedDi…

Baseline adherence to the Mediterranean diet and major cardiovascular events: Prevención con dieta mediterránea trial

2014

Lifestyle modification, particularly dietary changes, is the cornerstone of population-based strategies for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention.1 Recently the Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea (PREDIMED) study,2 a 5-year randomized primary prevention trial (isrctn.org Identifier: ISRCTN35739639), showed a 30% reduction in incident CVD with Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) intervention in comparison with a control diet. At quarterly visits throughout the study, a validated 14-item MeDiet screening tool (Table 1) was used to assess conformity with this dietary pattern.3 Close monitoring of adherence to dietary instructions for CVD prevention is difficult in the clinical setting. Short dietary …

A new species ofCentaurea(Asteraceae) from Sicily

2008

A new species of Centaurea, Centaurea sicana, endemic to Sicily, is described. This new taxon is close to Centaurea parlatoris and Centaurea giardinae (Sect. Dissectae), the former occurring at Palermo and in the Madonie Mountains, while the latter occurs on the Etna volcano. The new species has so far been found only on the Sicani Mountains, a limestone mountain range in western Sicily, while the related species occur in the surrounding mountains. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 157, 785–788.

Exceptional sea turtle nest records in 2011 suggest an underestimated nesting potential in Sicily (Italy)

2012

We report seven nesting events by loggerhead sea turtles in Sicily (Italy) in 2011. In comparison to past records, this number is relatively high and may be at least in part due to an awareness campaign carried out in 2011 to solicit such reports. This suggests that Sicily may host a much higher nesting activity than previously thought and higher monitoring effort is recommended, especially in certain coastal tracts. Sand temperatures and incubation periods indicate that the beaches monitored so far in the southern coast are not optimal for development, resulting in low hatching success, and produce a majority of males. Five 2011 nests and two past nests from the same area had mtDNA haploty…
