If we eat soy, do we keep the beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet?

2020

PurposeThis study aims to evaluate if soya consumption can compromise or positively influence the effects of the Mediterranean diet (MD).Design/methodology/approachA full literature review has been conducted as part of a proposal of a new point of view on the consumption of soya and its derivatives in areas where until a few decades ago this type of food did not exist at all.FindingsThere does not seem to be any contraindications for soy systematic use, therefore, excluding historical-geographical reasons, soya could be included in an MD without altering the benefits associated with it.Practical implicationsSoya is not advised as a typical food in the MD, but promoting its use could probabl…

Survey on energy drink consumption among the adult population in sicily: Do new drinking habits associate with the risk of alcoholism in the Crib of …

2017

Background: The market for and the level of energy drinks (EDs) consumption are increasing every year, and while only a few have a comprehensive knowledge about the potential harmful physiological and psychological effects of EDs, the number of publications that have documented the potential adverse risks associated with the use of these beverages remains small. Objectives: The present study aim to evaluate the prevalence of EDs consumers among the adult population and to verify the factors associated with its consumption and onset of adverse events. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) semi-structured questionnaire, …

A Case-Study of Green Roof Monitoring: The Building of Council for Agricultural Research and Economics in Bagheria, (Italy)

2018

The energy saving in building goes on as an important challenge in the policy of Developed Countries. While the issue of energy building efficiency in heating season has deeply been investigated for a long time, the issue of energy building efficiency in cooling season is relatively recent. Moreover, considering the increase of electric consumption for air-conditioning in summer, mainly due to the growing quality of life, the research of technologies for reducing energy building consumption during this season becomes essential. The green roof represents a technology useful to reduce the energy consumption during the cooling season. In this work the authors report the results of a monitoring…

Risky consumption of alcohol in nursing students

2019

BACKGROUND: abuse of alcohol among students is a problem that has not to be undervalued because it can damage mental and global health and, as a consequence, it can negatively influence the academic and training performance roping at the end on patients’ health. Our study focused particularly on nursing students of the University of Palermo of the three years of course with the aim to estimate the prevalence of risky alcohol consumption and to analyze the associated factors. MethODs: in april 2019 a questionnaire was administered to all the nursing students of University of Palermo of the three years of course, accompanied by informed consent. Multivariable logistic regression was performed…

Active geodynamics of the central Mediterranean Sea: Tensional tectonic evidences in western Sicily from mantle-derived helium

2005

[1] We report results on the measured high 3He/4He isotope ratio in western Sicily, interpreted together with the heat data. The study of this sector of the Europe-Africa interaction is crucial to a better understanding of the tectonics and the geodynamical evolution of the central Mediterranean area. The estimated mantle-derived helium fluxes in the investigated areas are up to 2–3 orders of magnitude greater than those of a stable continental area. The highest flux, found in the southernmost area near the Sicily Channel, where recent eruptions of the Ferdinandea Island occurred 20 miles out to sea off Sciacca, has been associated with a clear excess of heat flow. Our results indicate that…

Weed seedbank size and composition in a long-term tillage and crop sequence experiment

2015

Summary Knowledge of the effects of agricultural practices on weed seedbank dynamics is essential for predicting future problems in weed management. This article reports data relative to weed seedbank structure after 18 years of continuous application of conventional tillage (CT, based on mouldboard ploughing) or no tillage (NT) within three crop sequences (continuous wheat, WW; wheat–faba bean, WF; and wheat–berseem clover, WB). Tillage system did not affect the size of the total weed seedbank, but altered both its composition and the distribution of seeds within the soil profile. In particular, the adoption of CT favoured some species (mainly Polygonum aviculare), whereas the continuous u…

The Arch as a Composition Element of the Patio in Xativa. XIV-XVIII Centuries

2021

The Arch as a Composition Element of the Patio in Xativa. XIV-XVIII Centuries In the Mediterranean architectural tradition, the patio/courtyard is a “vertebral” space within the configuration of the house. It gives rise to a common typology in the former territories of the Crown of Aragon and other regions bathed by the Mare Nostrum, thus demonstrating the existence of an exchange of knowledge and culture from ancient times. In the particular case of the extinct kingdom of Valencia, as a result of the Christian conquest of the 13th century, this type began to develop, evolving over the years in terms of aesthetics, but not from the point of view of function. In this process of evolution a c…

Dalle geografie terracquee alla Wet Perspective: scie e onde del Mediterraneo Nero

2023

Beginning in the modern age, with the progressive conquest and discovery of the 'Outside', the sea became the leading element in the processes that have marked living in the sphere from then on (Sloterdijk, 2008). Although subject to mutations in time and space, the assumed terracqueous perspective moves away from the exclusivity of terracentrism towards a recognition of the centrality of the space of the sea. A space, on the one hand, that has become central to the production and reproduction of capital through accumulation and exploitation; on the other hand, a social, cultural, political space from which emerge the possibilities of breaking its structures of domination, power, hierarchis…
