Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an auto inflammatory syndrome, characterized by recurrent febrile episodes, arthritis, oral aphthous stomatitis, rash, serositis, abdominal and thoracic pain. Longterm outcome is conventionally linked to the severity of the recurrent attacks and to the risk of systemic amyloidosis. However recent studies highlighted the role of chronic inflammatory diseases in the insurance of atherosclerosis. Risk factors for atherosclerosis are also recently identified in a higher medium platelet volume (MPV).

Prehatching maternal investment and offspring immunity in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca).

Maternal investment in offspring immunity via egg quality may be an adaptive evolutionary strategy shaped by natural selection. We investigated how maternal investment in eggs can influence offspring immunity by conducting two experiments. First, we manipulated foraging performance of the mothers before egg laying by attaching a small weight to their back feathers. XMM-Newton large programme on SN1006 - II. Thermal emission

Based on the XMM-Newton large program on SN1006 and our newly developed spatially resolved spectroscopy tools (Paper~I), we study the thermal emission from ISM and ejecta of SN1006 by analyzing the spectra extracted from 583 tessellated regions dominated by thermal emission. With some key improvements in spectral analysis as compared to Paper~I, we obtain much better spectral fitting results with less residuals. The spatial distributions of the thermal and ionization states of the ISM and ejecta show different features, which are consistent with a scenario that the ISM (ejecta) is heated and ionized by the forward (reverse) shock propagating outward (inward). AE Aurigae: First detection of non-thermal X-ray emission from a bow shock produced by a runaway star

2012

Runaway stars produce shocks when passing through interstellar medium at supersonic velocities. Bow shocks have been detected in the mid-infrared for several high-mass runaway stars and in radio waves for one star. Theoretical models predict the production of high-energy photons by non-thermal radiative processes in a number sufficiently large to be detected in X-rays. To date, no stellar bow shock has been detected at such energies. We present the first detection of X-ray emission from a bow shock produced by a runaway star. Indications of a Si-rich bilateral jet of ejecta in the Vela SNR observed with XMM-Newton

Context. The Vela supernova remnant displays several ejecta, which are fragment-like features protruding beyond the front of its primary blast shock wave. They appear to be "shrapnel", bowshock-shaped relics of the supernova explosion. One of these pieces of shrapnel (A), located in the northeastern edge of the remnant, is peculiar because its X-ray spectrum exhibits a high Si abundance, in contrast to the other observed ejecta fragments, which show enhanced O, Ne, and Mg abundances. Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Distribution of Residual Stresses Induced by Laser Shock Peening in a 2050-T8 Aluminium Alloy

Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative surface treatment technique successfully applied to improving fatigue performance of metallic material. The specific characteristic of (LSP) is the generation of a low work-hardening and a deep compressive residual stresses mechanically produced by a laser-induced shock wave propagating in the material. The aim of this study is to analyse the residual stress distribution induced by laser peening in 2050-T8 aluminium alloy experimentally by the X-ray diffraction technique (method sin2Y) and numerically, by a finite element numerical modelling. A specific focus was put on the residual stress distribution along the surface of the impacted material.

On the Origin of Asymmetries in Bilateral Supernova Remnants

AIMS: We investigate whether the morphology of bilateral supernova remnants (BSNRs) observed in the radio band is determined mainly either by a non-uniform interstellar medium (ISM) or by a non-uniform ambient magnetic field. METHODS: We perform 3-D MHD simulations of a spherical SNR shock propagating through a magnetized ISM. Two cases of shock propagation are considered: 1) through a gradient of ambient density with a uniform ambient magnetic field; 2) through a homogeneous medium with a gradient of ambient magnetic field strength. Large-scale jets from active galactic nuclei as a source of intracluster medium heating: cavities and shocks

The evolution of powerful extragalactic jets is not only interesting by itself, but also for its impact on the evolution of the host galaxy and its surroundings. We have performed long-term axisymmetric numerical simulations of relativistic jets with different powers to study their evolution through an environment with a pressure and density gradient. Our results show key differences in the evolution of jets with different powers in terms of the spatial and temporal scales of energy deposition. According to our results, the observed morphology in X-ray cavities requires that an important fraction of the jet’s energetic budget is in the form of internal energy.
