Proteins have important functions inside the cell, traveling diffusively or being actively transported to various cellular sites where their activity is needed. Protein motion in the cellular environment is therefore an important topic to understand. However, the cell provides a very complex environment for that motion, which poses problems especially for any modeling effort designed to interpret experimentally observed features. Improvement of photo-stability of LLDPE-based nanocomposites

LLDPE-based nanocomposites undergo faster photo-oxidation than the unfilled matrix and the extent of their physical properties deterioration, namely elongation at break and tensile strength, is dependent on the organo-nanoclay loading. The observed acceleration is not due to faster photo-oxidation but rather due to a reduction of the oxidation induction time. The presence in the organoclays of trace amounts of metal ions may be promoting catalytic photodegradation. While UV absorbers provide useful protection, use of a metal deactivator has been found to greatly enhance the photo-stability of the LLDPE-based nanocomposites. The formal redox potential of the Yb(III,II) Couple at 0°C in 3.22 molal NaCl medium

Following our previous investigations on aqueous solutions of hypooxidized and iperoxidized species, we managed, by lowering the temperature of the solutions to 0 degrees C, to obtain, by electrochemical methods, Yb(II) and Yb(III) mixtures, enough stable to determine by a potentiometric method the formal redox potential of the Yb(IlI, II) couple. Its value, in a large range of total Ytterbium concentration, is -1233 +/- 3 mV against the molal hydrogen electrode in the 3.22 m NaCl medium.
ZnO – Yb2O3 composite optical ceramics: Synthesis, structure and spectral-luminescent properties

International audience; Zinc oxide optical ceramics containing 0 – 2 wt% ytterbium are prepared byuniaxial hot pressing of commercial oxides at 1150 and 1180 °C. The ceramics have themain crystalline phase of hexagonal wurtzite-type ZnO. Ytterbium ions do not enter theZnO crystals but form a cubic sesquioxide phase of Yb2O3 located at the ZnO grainboundaries. Yb acts as an inhibitor for the ZnO grain growth. The ceramics exhibittransmittance up to 60% in the visible. Their transmission in the infrared is determinedby the free charge carrier absorption. Micromechanical approach of the high temperature oxidation of zirconium: study of the Zr/ZrO2 interfacial epitaxy with Bollmann's method

The method of Bollmann has been used to determine the role of epitaxy in the formation of the mechanical stress field near the metal/oxide interface during the high temperature oxidation of zirconium. The strains due to epitaxy combine with those due to both oxygen diffusion in metal and thermal expansion of the metal/oxide composite in a model based on a micromechanical formalism. The calculated values are compared to experimental results and the applicability of Bollmann's method to this problem is discussed.
Electrochemistry of vanadium-doped ZrSiO4Site-selective electrocatalytic effect on nitrite oxidation

The electrochemistry of vanadium-doped zircon (VxZrSiO4, 0 < x < 0.10) has been studied using abrasive-conditioned paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes. It is compared with that of ZrSiO4, ZrO2, and vanadium-doped tetragonal and monoclinic zirconias. In contact with acetic/acetate and HCl + NaCl electrolytes, zirconium materials are reduced to Zr(III) at potentials near to −0.5 versus AgCl/Ag and to Zr metal at potentials more negative than −1.2 V, via proton-assisted reductive processes, influenced by the complexing action of chloride ions. Thio(bisphenolato) complexes of the type [M2(mu-tbop-kappa3O,S,O)2Cl4] [M = Zr 1, Hf 2 and tbop = 2,2-thiobis{4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-butyl)phenolate}] were prepared by HCl elimination from tbopH2 and MCl4. Substitution of the chlorides in 1 and 2 by 2,6-diisopropylphenolato groups (dipp) generates new compounds [M2(mu-tbop-kappa3O,S,O)2(dipp)4] (M = Zr 3, Hf 4). The structures of 1-4 were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy; complexes 3 and 4 were further investigated by X-ray crystallography. Mechanical Stresses: Inhibitor of Catalyst of High Temperature Oxidation?

Oxidation of metals is a complex reaction in which mechanical and chemical phenomena occur. A dynamic and macroscopic model is developed in order to simulate oxidation kinetics of a metal. It includes the stress/diffusion coupling in the bulk and the interfacial phenomena at metal/oxide interface. Its application to the Zr/ZrO 2 system shows the important role of stress field distribution in oxide on kinetic behavior. According to the sign of stress gradient in the oxide scale, the oxidation rate can speed up or slow down. The calculated kinetic curves could he fitted using a k p .t 1/n law where n and kp vary all over the process, like for the experimental kinetic curves.
Synthesis and characterization of V2O5SiO2ZrO2 pigments by sol-gel method

Abstract Polymeric gels in the V2O5 SiO2 ZrO2 system were prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), zirconium(IV)-n-propoxide and vanadium(IV) oxyacetylacetonate, precursors. The effects of prehydrolysis time of TEOS and drying gel method on the stabilization of tetragonal zirconia in the silica amorphous matrix, nucleation and growth of the zircon (ZrSiO4) phase, and stabilization of the blue and green stains of vanadium zircon were studied. Results provide evidence that long time of prehydrolysis and fast drying do not favour zircon crystallization but stabilize the tetragonal zirconia in the amorphous matrix.
