Cyclodextrins in Polymer Synthesis:  Free Radical Copolymerization of Methylated β-Cyclodextrin Complexes of Hydrophobic Monomers with N-Isopropylacr…

2000

Methylated β-cyclodextrin (me-β-CD) was used to form water-soluble host/guest complexes with the hydrophobic monomers n-butyl methacrylate (1), cyclohexyl methacrylate (2), isobornyl acrylate (3), isobornyl methacrylate (4), and styrene (5), respectively. The free-radical copolymerizations of the water-soluble N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) with these complexed monomers were carried out in water at different molar ratios.

Polymer and Dye Probe Diffusion in Poly(methyl methacrylate) below the Glass Transition Studied by Forced Rayleigh Scattering

1999

By dissolving tracer quantities of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) it was possible to study by forced Rayleigh scattering (FRS) the tracer diffusion of the unbleached PQ as well as the photoproduct which is covalently bound to the PMMA molecules. The PMMA samples with molecular weights, Mw, of 103−105 were intermittently annealed at 80 °C for diffusion times of up to one year. From the results we conclude that polymer chain diffusion may be possible at temperatures more than 20 K below the glass transition temperature Tg, but further experiments are necessary, in particular, since we cannot exclude that our results are due to yet unexplained long time aging…

Poly(1,2-glycerol carbonate): A Fundamental Polymer Structure Synthesized from CO2 and Glycidyl Ethers

2013

The functional, aliphatic poly(1,2-glycerol carbonate) as a fundamental, simple polymer structure based on glycerol and CO2 was prepared by combination of glycidyl ether monomers with carbon dioxide via two different approaches. The material was obtained by two-step procedures either via copolymerization of (i) ethoxy ethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) or (ii) benzyl glycidyl ether (BGE) with CO2, followed by removal of the respective protecting groups via acidic cleavage for (i) and hydrogenation for (ii). The resulting protected polycarbonate structures and the targeted poly(1,2-glycerol carbonate) were investigated with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as 2D-NMR methods. Removal of both …

Improving the properties of polypropylene–wood flour composites by utilization of maleated adhesion promoters

2007

Polymer composites filled with natural organic fillers have gained a significant interest during the last few years, because of several advantages they can offer compared with properties of inorganic-mineral fillers. However, these composites (based, in most cases, on polyolefins) often show a reduction in some mechanical properties. This is mainly due to the problems regarding dispersion of the polar filler particles in the non-polar polymer matrix and their interfacial adhesion with polymer chains. In this work, polypropylene-wood flour composites were prepared and the effect of the addition of a maleated polypropylene was investigated. The two materials were compounded by an industrial c…

An Electronic Perspective On The Electrochemical Changeover In Prussian Blue-Like Materials

2009

Derivative voltabsometric scans together with previous electrogravimetric results allow to distinguish between the different electrochemical processes due to Fe-sites located into the Prussian Blue crystalline framework and other located next to ferrocyanide vacancies. The potassium, proton and hydrated proton counterions involved in these reactions are correlated to changes in near-UV/VIS/near-IR spectra. Potassium counter-ions show two different sites for insertion: one located into the crystalline framework and the other into ferrocyanide vacancies. From the monitoring of electroactive Fe-sites, it is possible to assume that the reduction of all Fe-sites located next to ferrocyanide vaca…

High energy radiation cure of resin systems for structural adhesives and composite applications

2002

Abstract Radiation cure polymerisation of a commercial diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F epoxy resin has been achieved using a 60Co irradiation source, compounding the monomer with few percentage of an onium salt catalyst. The cure process has been monitored by a gamma-calorimetric technique and systems irradiated at doses corresponding to different positions in the gamma-calorimetric curve have been characterised via solubility tests and dynamic mechanical torsion analysis. Changes in both the measured gel fractions and tan δ values were associated with the progress of polymerisation and crosslinking reactions and these were dose dependent. Furthermore, systems irradiated at lower doses exhi…

E-beam curing of epoxy based blends in order to produce high performance composites

2007

In this work, blends of a difunctional epoxy monomer and a thermoplastic toughening agent are E-beam irradiated at two different dose rates and two different total absorbed doses. The influence of the processing conditions on the thermal properties and on the morphology of the obtained matrices has been investigated. In particular, it is shown how the increase of the dose rate causes an increase of the temperature during irradiation, thus inducing a simultaneous thermal and radiation curing. On the contrary, at low-dose rate the system mainly undergoes to radiation curing, thus making the cured material very sensible to a post-irradiation thermal treatment with a significant improvement of …

Radiolabeling of DOTATOC with the long-lived positron emitter 44Sc.

2010

Abstract The positron-emitting radionuclide 44 Sc with a half-life of 3.97 h and a β + branching of 94.3% is of potential interest for clinical PET. As so far it is available from a 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator in Mainz, where long-lived 44 Ti decays to no-carrier-added (nca) 44 Sc. The 44 Sc is a trivalent metal cation and should be suitable for complexation with many well established bifunctional chelators conjugated to peptides or other molecular targeting vectors. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the potential of 44 Sc for labeling of DOTA-conjugated peptides. DOTA-D-Phe 1 -Tyr 3 -octreotide (DOTATOC) was used as a model molecule to study and optimize labeling procedure. Reaction…

Characterization of oriented protein-ceramic and protein-polymer-composites for cartilage tissue engineering using synchrotron μ-CT

2007

Abstract In this paper we report on the synthesis of three different gelatine based scaffold materials for the reconstruction of articular cartilage defects. The first scaffold design is based on an unmodified, oriented gelatine network, while the second design further comprises an attached inorganic hydroxyapatite layer and the third design includes poly(l-lactide) microspheres as a model material for future drug-release applications. All three scaffold designs were characterized and imaged using synchrotron μ-CT, obtaining a complete volumetric reconstruction of a previously defined sample region. Furthermore, two unmodified scaffolds were cultivated for one week with porcine chondrocytes…
