Barwy melancholii w "Effi Briest" - czyli Theodor Fontane według Cranacha
2017
This article deals with a few parallels between the storyline of Fontane’s heroine, Effi Briest, and the famous Lucas Cranach’s painting, the Melancholy, which presents a symbolic female figurę dressed in red with an allegoric setting of pleasure and damnation. Both cases correspond with the rigorous protestant view of life suggesting close connection between sensual joy and the mortal sin of melancholy: the German Madame Bovary follows the same evolution as that indicated by Cranach’s allegory, she goes her tragic way from the redness of love-affair through the melancholie experience to the blackness of social damnation and, ultimately, death. The religious notions of resignation and escha…
Forms of nostalgia in Henry James’s "The American Scene"
2018
Henry James was not a sentimental writer. However, in his later books we can find traces of repressed emotions and melancholy. One of the most intriguing literary documents showing the nostalgic strain in James is his collection The American Scene (1907), a record of the novelist’s return to the USA after a twenty-years-old absence. It contains various manifestations of James’s nostalgia – for example, his memories of New York and his melancholic recollections of the places connected with his youth. Also, it shows James’s convoluted rhetoric of memory as a space of repression and displacement as well as his unwillingness to address these issues in a direct fashion.

Claudio Monteverdi entre acédia e melancolia
2014
Love melancholy is a central aspect of early modern era. Sixteenth century Italy is dominated by Petrach’s model, the acedia, a condition which is characterized by love pain and lack of reciprocity. But during the seventeenth century also a new melancholy feeling appears, a more gentle one characterized by a sweet nostalgia. In the article two compositions by Claudio Monteverdi are compared: Zefiro torna, on a text by Petrarca, for five voices, which is an example of the first idea of melancholy; and Zefiro torna, on a text by Rinuccini (a rewriting of the Petrarchan sonnet), for two tenors and continuo, which is an example of the second one. In the first composition Monteverdi draws upon t…
The strange identity: the sexual alterity in L’aprenentatge de la soledat, by David Vilaseca (2008)
2018
Rotting Melancholy: The False Utopia of Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Buried Giant"
2018
Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2015) constitutes an interesting contemporary reworking of the motif of melancholy. In the universe of the book – a combination of Arthurian setting with the elements of fantasy – people experience the peculiar state of melancholic oblivion brought upon them by the mysterious fog. Although this fog enables a peaceful coexistence of previous enemies, it also causes the feelings of overwhelming uneasiness and unidentified menace. In this context, Ishiguro’s vision appears to be the representation of the false utopia where memory is sacrificed to achieve ostensible perfection. This paper discusses the approaches to melancholy, both ancient and more contempora…
2016
Review of Cuozzo's book. The book starts from an analysis of social and political reality, with forays into the world of advertising and cinematography, in the ecological debate and even in the consumer variants of the wonderful country of Oz (because the storytelling magicians, today, are really many). With it the author tries to answer the following questions: is it still possible to hope today? what is utopia in the face of the harsh reality that surrounds us? what meaning can melancholy and the desire for what is missing in a world invaded by technology and dominated by commodity still have? Utopias and reality suggests exploring reality with a new look; as the great painters teach, fir…
