Multifocal aplasia cutis congenita, distal limb hemimelia, and cutis marmorata telangiectatica in a patient with Adams-Oliver syndrome.
1992
Summary We describe an 18-month-old boy with multifocal scalp defects over the posterior parietal region combined with an underlying defect of the skull, left lower limb distal hemimelia and generalized cutis marmorata telangiectatica, consistent with a diagnosis of Adams–Oliver syndrome (aplasia cutis congenita with distal transverse limb defects).
Ulnar ray defect in an infant with a 6q21;7q31.2 translocation: Further evidence for the existence of a limb defect gene in 6q21
1995
Ectrodactyly is a developmental defect of the distal limbs characterized by marked clinical variability and genetic heterogeneity, also reflected in the observation of different chromosome abnormalities non randomly associated with longitudinal postaxial limb deficiencies. The one most frequently found in patients with split hand-split foot (SHSF) involves chromosome band 7q22. Recently, structural anomalies of chromosome 6q21 have been reported in 2 unrelated patients with SHSF, suggesting that this region may also contain genes responsible for limb development [Braverman et al., 1993. Am J Hum Genet, suppl 53: 410; Viljoen and Smart, 1993. Clin Dysmorph 2: 274-277]. We report on a third p…
Acromesomelic dysplasia Maroteaux type maps to human chromosome 9.
1998
SummaryAcromesomelic dysplasias are skeletal disorders that disproportionately affect the middle and distal segments of the appendicular skeleton. We report genetic mapping studies in four families with acromesomelic dysplasia Maroteaux type (AMDM), an autosomal recessive osteochondrodysplasia. A peak LOD score of 5.1 at recombination fraction 0 was obtained with fully informative markers on human chromosome 9. In three of the four families, the affected offspring are products of consanguineous marriages; if it is assumed that these affected offspring are homozygous by descent for the region containing the AMDM locus, a 6.9-cM AMDM candidate interval can be defined by markers D9S1853 and D9…
Prospective double-blind clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of Bromelain in the third molar extraction postoperative period
2014
Objectives: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect of Bromelain (pineapple extract) administered orally in the postoperative after extraction of impacted lower molars. Study Design: This is a prospective, placebo-controlled, unicentric, double-blind study; the sample size was 34 patients. The pre and postoperative outcomes, evaluated on the third (D3) and eighth day (D8), included inflamtion, pain and oral aperture, as well as the need for analgesics. One group received bromelain 150mg per day for three days and 100mg on days 4 to 7. The other group received placebo in the same dosage. All outcomes werrecorded quantitatively and analyzed with the Mann-Whitney U test for inde…
Comparative study of serine-plasmalogens in human retina and optic nerve: identification of atypical species with odd carbon chains
2012
International audience; The objective of this work was to detect and identify phosphatidylserine plasmalogen species in human ocular neurons represented by the retina and the optic nerve. Plasmalogens (vinyl-ether bearing phospholipids) are commonly found in the forms of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine in numerous mammalian cell types, including the retina. While their biological functions are still unclear, the alteration of cellular plasmalogen content has been associated with several human disorders such as Rhizomelic Chondrodysplasia Punctata Type 2 and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma.By using liquid-chromatography coupled to high resolution and tandem mass spectrometry, we…
Ejaculate fractioning effect on llama sperm head morphometry as assessed by the ISAS(®) CASA system.
2013
Contents South American camelid sperm characteristics are poorly known compared with those of other domestic animals. The long-term duration of ejaculation makes difficult to gather all the seminal fluid, implying possible ejaculation portion losses. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the characteristics of the morphology and morphometry of the spermatozoa change during ejaculation. The morphometric characterization was tested on nine specimens of the Lanuda breed, using a special artificial vagina. In five of the animals, a fractioning of the ejaculate was performed by taking samples every 5 min. for a total of 20 min. Air-dried seminal smears were stained with Hemacolor and mo…
Two new cases of Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius (TAR) syndrome: Clinical, Genetic and Nosologic Features
1988
Two unrelated children affected by TAR syndrome, autosomic recessive disease with congenital thrombocytopenia and bilateral radial aplasia, are described. In the first case a mild thrombocytopenia has been compatible with a fairly normal life until the second year of age. The other child shows radial aplasia associated with other anomalies of the upper limbs, severe thrombocytopenia and leukemoid reaction. The relationship among TAR syndrome, Fanconi's anemia and Roberts' syndrome are briefly discussed.
Facing the dawn of immunotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma.
2013
In this study, administration of tremelimumab was accompanied by a tolerable toxicity profile, most frequently including skin rash (65%), fatigue (55%), and anorexia (50%). During the initial course of tremilimumab, a transient increase of serum transaminase activity was observed. Hepatotoxicity did not impair liver function, even in the context of Child-Pugh B cirrhosis and hepatitis C. Therapy was stopped in 3 patients before tumor response evaluation was completed due to tremilimumab-related diarrhea or clinical deterioration, which was not associated with the treatment regimen. The relevance of this study is strengthened by the inclusion of HCC patients, showing hepatitis C associated c…
Sperm kinematic characterization of alpaca ( Vicugna pacos L.) during the reproductive season
2018
Semen analysis is a key factor when determining the fertility ability in males. South American camelids, and in particular the alpaca, have been studied very little when compared with other farm animals. The aim of this work was to perform the kinematic characterization of alpaca spermatozoa collected directly from the deferent duct by using CASA-Mot (Computer Assisted Semen Analysis for Motility) technology. Samples were obtained every three days throughout the reproductive season during two periods and with a break of seven days in the middle. During both periods, the quality of the sample's motility and kinematics increased over the first two days and then subsequently decreased. This pa…
Effects of human disturbance on cave-nesting seabirds: The case of the storm petrel
2015
We tested the effects of human disturbance in two sub-colonies of Mediterranean storm petrel. We conducted three experiments to measure the capacity of the storm petrels to respond to stress. The part of the colony exposed to human disturbance resulted to be habituated and did not show chronic stress related to anthropogenic disturbance.
