The Annealing Behavior of the Subsurface Zone Induced by Friction in Bismuth Detected by Positron Lifetime Technique
2013
The annealing behavior of the subsurface zone (SZ) in pure bismuth induced by dry sliding was studied using the positron lifetime measurement. This measurement allows us to detect the SZ and its recovery, and recrystallization processes. The comparative measurements of the sample exposed to compression revealed the thermal stability of the SZ. The compressed sample rebuilt its structure due to the recovery and recrystallization processes at the temperature of 60 °C, whereas the sample exposed to dry sliding does it at higher temperature of 260 °C, which is close to the melting point. The isothermal annealing at the temperature of 100 °C confirmed these results. The defect depth profile indu…
Laser densification of organic coating: Effects of laser wavelength, operating parameters and substrate properties
2012
International audience; Mechanical bonding and interface behaviour play a key role for any materials deposited on different substrates. Usually, a post-spray heat treatment is required to improve the coating morphology and to enhance mechanical properties of thermal-sprayed polymeric coating. The effects of YAG, CO2 and diode laser radiations on as-sprayed PEEK coating deposited on stainless steel and aluminum substrates were investigated. The results revealed a good coating densification and interface behavior. A correlation between coating and substrate absorption coefficients, their thermophysical properties and laser operating parameters was shown. Besides, the finite element modeling b…
Helium bubbles in alpha-irradiated aluminium: positron lifetime studies
1985
The formation of He-stabilised voids in aluminium single crystals injected with helium is monitored by positron lifetime measurements. The bubbles are observed to grow during annealing from 300 to 930K. The bubbles are extremely stable and survive annealing up to the melting point. Positron lifetime data are used to discuss the He density inside the bubbles and their growth mechanism.
Thermal behavior and spherulitic superstructures of SBC triblock copolymers based on polystyrene (S), polybutadiene (B) and a crystallizable poly(ɛ-c…
1996
The dynamic crystallization and the melting behavior of polystyrene-block-poly(e-caprolactone) (PS-b-PCL, short notation SC), polybutadiene-block-poly(e-caprolactone) (PB-b-PCL, BC) and polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(e-caprolactone) (PS-b-PB-b-PCL, SBC) have been studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The copolymers with high molecular weight exhibit microphase separation into microphases consisting of polystyrene, polybutadiene and poly(e-caprolactone) and partial crystallization of the corresponding PCL block. The crystallization occurs at temperatures below the PS glass transition. Depending on the block copolymer composition, crystallization takes place through a c…
Thermomechanical properties of radiation-modified blends of polyethylene with liquid crystalline copolyester
1999
The results of investigation of gamma irradiated blends of high-density polyethylene (PE) with thermotropic polymer liquid crystal (PLC) are presented. The PLC used was a copolyester of 40% poly(ethylene terephthalate) with 60% p-(hydroxy-benzoic acid). The PLC content in the blends was 0, 5, and 10 wt%. The constituents were blended with the use of a single screw extruder. The specimens were prepared by compression molding. The irradiation of the samples was performed by a Co 60 γ-radiation source in inert atmosphere (argon) up to absorbed relatively low doses (up to 200 kGy: 1 Mrad = 10 kGy). The morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties were investigated for irradiated and unirra…
On the formation of lamellae during annealing of extended chain crystals of radiation-polymerized trioxane
1969
Abstract The structure changes of radiation-polymerized trioxane taking place during annealing have been studied by means of electron microscopy, X-ray small- and wide-angle scattering, and differential thermal analysis. The original fibrillar crystals, supposedly consisting of extended chains, change into lamellar crystals due to annealing at temperatures between 150° and 190°C. Lamella formation can be connected with the appearance of a long period of about 200A which is not observed in the unannealed sample. During annealing within the same temperature range the X-ray reflections due to the twin structure of the original polytrioxane disappear, whereas the orientation of the fraction wit…
Ti-Al Membranes for Microfiltration
2016
Porous membranes made of Ti – 48 at. % Al intermetallic compound was obtained by elemental powder synthesis. These disks can be used as microfiltration membranes due to their low pores size and interconnected porosity. During this study titanium (purity 99.5%) and aluminum (purity 99 %) with low particle size range were mixed in corresponding ratios. The powder mixture was pressed at 500 MPa and the samples were heat treated in two stages. In the first step is the forming of Al3Ti compound by a solid state reaction at a temperature of 640 °C, slightly below the melting point of aluminum. In the second step the Ti-Al compound was formed at the temperature of 1300 °C and the sintering the por…
TeO2 liquid phase: Viscosity measurements and evaluation of the thermal conductivity from crystal growth experiments
2008
Current applications of paratellurite TeO{sub 2} in optics and nuclear physics require improving the yield and optical quality of synthesized single crystals. Modelling of the growth process is a useful tool for such purpose, however, involving the knowledge of several thermodynamic parameters of both solid and liquid phase of the compound. This work describes the determination of two main unknown ones, namely dynamic viscosity {eta} and thermal conductivity {lambda}{sub l} of the liquid phase. Measurements of {eta} are performed by means of a specifically designed apparatus; over a 40 K temperature interval above the melting point we find a mean value of 0.028 Pa.s. This data is used in co…
Semiconductor-metal transitions in liquidIn100−xSexalloys: A concentration-induced transition
2004
The electronic and structural properties of ${\mathrm{In}}_{100\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Se}}_{x}$ liquid alloys close to their melting points have been investigated by combining x-ray-absorption experiments with ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations. Extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure data have been acquired at both the In and Se K edges in a large concentration range $(x=20%$ to $x=50%$ of Se content). Ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations have been carried out at the two most extreme concentrations explored experimentally. Liquid InSe is found to retain a semiconducting behavior which results from a low-dimensional structure, reminiscent of that of the ambient solid phase, cha…
