Neuroanatomical substrate of noise sensitivity.

2018

Recent functional studies suggest that noise sensitivity, a trait describing attitudes towards noise and predicting noise annoyance, is associated with altered processing in the central auditory system. In the present work, we examined whether noise sensitivity could be related to the structural anatomy of auditory and limbic brain areas. Anatomical MR brain images of 80 subjects were parcellated with FreeSurfer to measure grey matter volume, cortical thickness, cortical area and folding index of anatomical structures in the temporal lobe and insular cortex. The grey matter volume of amygdala and hippocampus was measured as well. According to our findings, noise sensitivity is associated wi…

Purification and characterization of the ?-β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase from dromedary liver mitochondria

2001

Abstract d -β-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) (EC 1.1.1.30), a membrane enzyme, has been purified to homogeneity from dromedary ( Camelus dromedarius ) liver mitochondria. Our new purification method consisted of the solubilization of mitochondrial membranes by Triton X 100 and purification of BDH by two steps: DEAE-Sephacel and Phenyl-Sepharose. The molecular mass of the enzyme subunit size was 67 kDa. The purified enzyme is recognized by anti rat liver mitochondrial BDH antibodies. Furthermore, BDH activity was absolutely dependent upon phospholipids. BDH is also characterized by specific enzymatic parameters: an optimum pH of approximately 8 for the oxidation reaction, and approximat…

Paracamelichnum Jumillensisn.ichnogen. n.ichnosp., Upper Miocene Camelidae Ichnites from the Hoya de la Sima site (Murcia, Spain)

2009

In the proximity of Jumilla (Murcia, Spain) there is a site called Hoya de la Sima with mammal footprints dating from the Upper Miocene. This site is an old gypsum quarry where footprints of Hipparion, Pecoripeda, Carnivora, Ursidae, and Proboscidea were discovered. While the site was being cleaned and conditioned after the discovery to protect the prints, Camelidae and other prints were unearthed and are currently being studied. The description of the Camelidae ichnites demonstrates that these belong to a new ichnogenera, produced by the prints of Paracamelus. The grouping of trackways is congruent with the gregariousness of these animals and with the concentration observed in similar site…

Morphological and biometrical features of Trypanosoma evansi isolates from an outbreak in mainland Spain.

2011

According to several authors, Trypanosoma evansi is a monomorphic trypanosome found exclusively in slender intermediate forms, although additional studies have revealed that many strains present stumpy forms on rare occasions. In a recent T. evansi outbreak in mainland Spain, several atypical forms were observed in blood smear examinations. Molecular procedures were then necessary to confirm the causal agent. Morphological and biometric measures were taken to characterize the different forms of T. evansi. In contrast to published information, the results of this study would indicate that biometrically distinct T. evansi could also be found in the same farm and even in the same animal specie…

The foaming properties of camel and bovine whey: The impact of pH and heat treatment

2018

International audience; he effect of heat treatment (70 degrees C or 90 degrees C for 30 min) on the foaming and interfacial properties of acid and sweet whey obtained from bovine and camel fresh milk was examined. The maximum foamability and foam stability were observed for acid whey when compared to sweet whey for both milks, with higher values for the camel whey. This behavior for acid whey was explained by the proximity of the pI of whey protein (4.9-5.2), where proteins were found to carry the lowest negative charge as confirmed by the zeta potential measurements. Interfacial properties of acid camel whey and acid bovine whey were preserved at air water interface even after a heat trea…

The Effect of Using Noise Cancellation Earplugs in Open-plan Offices of the Work Well-being and Work Performance of Software Professionals

2017

The popularity of open-plan offices has been on the rise recently and expanded to all sectors of working life. While moving to open-plan offices brings savings to companies, open-plan offices have been connected with various different negative consequences, such as noise. Noise has been found to be a central cause of dissatisfaction towards working in an open-plan office and lead to subsequent negative outcomes, such as decreased self-perceived health and weakened cognitive performance. Therefore, it is important to study the ways and technologies that could possibly mitigate the negative effects of noise on work well-being and work performance. This explorative study investigates both the …

Trypanosoma evansi infection in mainland Spain.

2009

An outbreak of Trypanosoma evansi infection that occurred in mainland Spain is described. The outbreak occurred on an equine and camel farm to which dromedary camels from an infected area of the Canary Islands had recently been introduced. One of these camels developed clinical signs and T. evansi was discovered in a blood smear examination. The herd was evaluated in order to determine the extent of the disease. The results showed that 76% of the camels, 35% of the donkeys and 2% of the horses were affected. The animals were isolated and treated using Cymelarsan((R)) (0.5mg/kg). After treatment, three blood analysis using parasitological methods revealed negative results. This is the first …
