A Memetic Differential Evolution in Filter Design for Defect Detection in Paper Production

2007

This article proposes a Memetic Differential Evolution (MDE) for designing digital filters which aim at detecting defects of the paper produced during an industrial process. The MDE is an adaptive evolutionary algorithm which combines the powerful explorative features of Differential Evolution (DE) with the exploitative features of two local searchers. The local searchers are adaptively activated by means of a novel control parameter which measures fitness diversity within the population. Numerical results show that the DE framework is efficient for the class of problems under study and employment of exploitative local searchers is helpful in supporting the DE explorative mechanism in avoid…

Ockham's Razor in Memetic Computing: Three Stage Optimal Memetic Exploration

2012

Memetic computing is a subject in computer science which considers complex structures as the combination of simple agents, memes, whose evolutionary interactions lead to intelligent structures capable of problem-solving. This paper focuses on memetic computing optimization algorithms and proposes a counter-tendency approach for algorithmic design. Research in the field tends to go in the direction of improving existing algorithms by combining different methods or through the formulation of more complicated structures. Contrary to this trend, we instead focus on simplicity, proposing a structurally simple algorithm with emphasis on processing only one solution at a time. The proposed algorit…

Hierarchical Evolutionary Algorithms and Noise Compensation via Adaptation

2007

Hierarchical Evolutionary Algorithms (HEAs) are Nested Algorithms composed by two or more Evolutionary Algorithms having the same fitness but different populations. More specifically, the fitness of a Higher Level Evolutionary Algorithm (HLEA) is the optimal fitness value returned by a Lower Level Evolutionary Algorithm (LLEA). Due to their algorithmic formulation, the HEAs can be efficiently implemented in Min-Max problems. In this chapter the application of the HEAs is shown for two different Min-Max problems in the field of Structural Optimization. These two problems are the optimal design of an electrical grounding grid and an elastic structure. Since the fitness of a HLEA is given by a…

2022

The article is devoted to one of the Internet memes ― Schrödinger’s cat. Cats have conquered the Internet, films with their participation, their photos have appeared on the Web since the very beginning of its existence. Memes with cats are used in demotivators to comment on current events, criticize politicians, ridicule celebrities. Schrödinger’s cat is different from most memes and serves as an intellectual game.

Exploring Collaborative Modeling as Teaching Method

2012

Group Model Building (GMB) often refers to collaborative system dynamics (SD) modeling. Despite its impressive success in various interdisciplinary domains, SD still struggles to be adopted as a mainstream method in the very areas where it has proven its worth. SD is hard to learn, and acquiring modeling skills can take long time. SD is mostly taught in modeling courses with examples from various disciplines, in a non-collaborative way. Learning SD modeling as a "byproduct" in courses (like ICT, security, industrial management) and in collaborative way would seem at the outset a losing proposition. Experiences with an approach using a project-oriented approach adapting ideas and exercises f…

Evolution of metaphors: Phylogeny of oil slick cartoons in Spanish press

2014

The main purpose of this article is to analyze the evolution of a metaphor set over time. By studying cartoons about the oil slick caused by the Prestige oil tanker in 2002 on Spanish shores and the subsequent court decision in 2013, we observe a progressive metaphor diversification and evolution, with the oil slick as an old common trait. Additionally, using basic cladistical methods, we propose a phylogenetic tree for the metaphor set, from a common ancestor to the subsequent diversification regarding news content. These results show that phylogenetic models can be very helpful in understanding the evolution of conceptual metaphors, and this method of analysis could even be a methodologi…

Sophisticated humor against COVID-19 : the Polish case

2021

Abstract The analysis undertaken in the article focuses on a group of memes selected from the database which drew on culture-specific references. Specifically, they embrace the memories of socialist times and call on references to comic films and easily recognized characters in order to bring out the re-discovered absurdity of the current COVID-19 situation. This material seems ideal to revisit Raskin’s early notion of sophistication, which was broadly argued to derive from intertextuality as well complexity of references that function as sources of humor. In all the examples discussed we can observe the intertextual and metatextual elements, multiple levels and shifts in points of view and…
