This Work in Progress Paper studies student and exercise modelling based on pass/fail log data gathered from an introductory programming course. Contemporary education capitalizes on the communications technology and remote study. This can create distance between the teacher and students and the resulting lack of awareness of the difficulties students encounter can lead to low student satisfaction, dropout and poor grades. In many cases, various technological solutions are used to collect individual exercise submissions, but there are little resources for indexing or modelling the exercises in depth. Exploring students’ identity development from the perspective of study difficulties

This work-in-progress paper in research category reports preliminary findings on how students taking introductory computing courses develop identity from the perspective of study difficulties. The motivation was that students identified lack of meaning and prospects (cf. identity) as a study difficulty in a previous qualitative study. The present study further explores this finding by issuing both an identity development and a self-efficacy scale to a larger first-year student cohort. The aims of this research were to examine the role of parents’ and teachers’ beliefs about children’s abilities in students’ self-concept of ability in the domains of literacy and mathematics, and whether the role of parents and teachers is different among boys and girls, and among low- and high-performing students. Student Athletes’ Causal Attributions for Sport and School Achievement in Relation to Sport Dropout and Grade Point Average

The present study longitudinally examined stability and change in the attributional profiles of Finnish student athletes (n = 391) in upper secondary sport schools. Moreover, it examined the extent to which these profiles, and changes in them, were associated with athletes’ level of sport competition and school achievements and dropouts at the end of upper secondary sport school. Using latent profile analysis, five different and highly stable attributional profiles were identified for student athletes: (a) depressive (6.9%), (b) athletic self-serving (23.0%), (c) average (16.4%), (d) learned helplessness (30.9%), and (e) responsible (22.8%). Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää yläasteikäisten oppilaiden yhteyksiä motoristen taito-jen ja päättöarvosanojen välillä. Lisäksi tarkoituksena oli selvittää sukupuolten välisiä eroja. Abstract In this study, we examined whether high-school students experienced optimal educational and well-being outcomes when they perceived that they and their classmates received an equal, rather than unequal, and high amount of autonomy support from teachers. This study aimed to identify organized sports participation patterns and their prevalence from adolescence to emerging adulthood, and the educational and family-related determinants of the patterns. Adolescents in the Finnish Health Promoting Sports Club (FHPSC) study answered a health behaviour questionnaire and reported on sports club participation at ages 15 and 19 (N = 609). Juomiskäyttäytymisen pitkän aikavälin muotoutumisesta tiedetään varsin vähän, sillä tutkimuksia samojen ihmisten käyttäytymisestä lapsuudesta aikuisuuteen on maailmassa vain muutama. Pitkänen osoitti tutkimuksessaan, että varhainen päihteiden käyttö, heikko itsehallinta ja kouluiän ongelmat ennakoivat alkoholin ongelmakäyttöä.Perhetaustaan liittyvät ongelmat, erityisesti vaikeudet vanhemmuudessa sekä vanhempien alkoholinkäyttö ja äidin tupakoiminen lisäsivät riskiä sekä varhaiseen alkoholinkäytön aloittamiseen että aikuisiän ongelmajuomiseen.
