Abstract C8 deficiency is associated with an increased susceptibility to neisserial infections. We present a case of an 11 year old boy who suffered from infection with Neisseria meningitidis . Medical history of the patient and his family ( n = 5) did not indicate any previous immunodeficiency symptoms. Results from the analysis of phagocyte and lymphocyte functions were within the normal range. No hemolytic activities of the classical (CH50) and the alternative (APH50) pathways of complement were measurable, and SC5b-9 protein complexes could not be detected in the patient's plasma. Summary The distribution of perikarya showing substance P- ( SP ) or calcitonin gene-related peptide-like inununoreactivity ( CGRP-LI ) in the rat trigeminal ganglion ( TG ) were investigated by means of immunohistochemical methods. Approximately 50% of the perikarya contain CGRP while SP-Ll was observed in 1/3 of the cells. IR fibres were seen to leave the ganglion via the ophtalmic, maxillary, and mandibular nerves. The combination of peptide histochemistry and retrograde labelling of cells in the ganglion following injection of a fluorescent tracer into the pineal gland reveals that few SP- or CGRP-LI trigeminal neurons innervate the pineal gland. Abstract Background We evaluated antibody persistence up to 68 months (M) post-vaccination with a quadrivalent meningococcal serogroups A, C, W and Y tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-TT) or a licensed monovalent MenC conjugate vaccine (MenC-CRM 197 ) and subsequent booster responses to MenACWY-TT in healthy European children. The course of intracranial pressure and volume-pressure relationships following extirpation of meningiomas and astrocytomas

Thirty-five patients with meningiomas were compared with 37 patients with astrocytomas with respect to the postoperative course of their ICP and elastance. In the case of the meningioma patients, the ICP increased on average over a longer period and achieved higher values than in the astrocytoma patients. In the first group, the elastance attained values that were three times as high as in the second group. There was no fixed relationship between pressure and elastance in the two groups of patients.
Long-Term Followup of Children with Colon Conduit Urinary Diversion and Ureterosigmoidostomy

Sixty-four children underwent colon conduit urinary diversion because of a neurogenic bladder owing to myelomeningocele and 39 children required a ureterosigmoidostomy because of bladder exstrophy. The average length of followup was 4.6 years after colon conduit and 5.6 years after ureterosigmoidostomy. Colon conduit diversion was secondary in 3 children and ureterosigmoidostomy was secondary in 5. Of the children with a colon conduit 9.4% and of those with ureterosigmoidostomy 12.8% had postoperative surgical complications. Sagittal static imbalance in myelomeningocele patients: improvement in sitting ability by partial and total gibbus resection

The progression of kyphosis in myelomeningocele is independent of skeletal growth and requires early operative correction and stabilization to prevent a loss of sitting ability. In severe cases, only vertebrectomy makes it possible to achieve correction, stability and skin-closure without tension. In 14 patients with myelomeningocele gibbus, kyphectomy was performed, removing two vertebral bodies on average. The average kyphosis angle decreased from 128 degrees to 81 degrees, enabling most of the patients to participate again in social life by restoring wheelchair mobility. Magnetic resonance imaging of dysraphic myelodysplasia

The spinal cord in 56 children and adolescents was examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) many years after neonatal surgery on a meningomyelocele (average age 12 years). In a high percentage of cases, the diagnosis "tethered cord" was made. Associated anomalies were found with a frequency of 21%. Typical findings are presented and the impact of these results on therapy planning is discussed.
