In Search for an Integrated Design Basis for Audio and Haptics

Audio and haptics as interaction modalities share properties, which make them highly appropriate to be handled within a single conceptual framework. This paper outlines such framework, gaining ingredients from the literature concerning cross-modal integration and embodied cognition. The resulting framework is bound up with a concept of physical embodiment, which has been introduced within several scientific disciplines to reveal the role of bodily experience and the corresponding mental imagery as the core of meaning-creation. In addition to theoretical discussion, the contribution of the proposed approach in design is outlined.

Abstract In this paper we report the results of a qualitative multimodal analysis of a corpus of Spanish and British TV ads featuring female hygiene products such as tampons, liners and sanitary towels/pads. We contend that advertisers of menstruation-related products employ a wide range of strategies to convey both overt information about the products advertised, as well as to – and more importantly – indirectly transmit stereotypical beliefs of women which inevitably helps reproduce and sometimes perpetuate a gender-biased type of discourse ( Holmes and Marra, 2005 ). The report provides a brief account of an experiment whose control conditions produced interestingly counter-intuitive results. The method adapted priming techniques to explore whether imagining well-known melodies would facilitate perceptual discrimination of congruent compared to incongruent melodic continuations in a syllable identification task. This was shown to be the case, but in a subsequent control experiment, imagining an irrelevant lure melody also showed a priming effect. In this paper we will show the need for a multimodal approach to the study of metaphorical utterances. We will discuss this hypothesis showing potentials and limits of the metaphor studies conducted within Relevance Theory, which has represented the most authoritative and radical theoretical framework based on the propositional character of metaphorical utterances.
