The hidden face of expertise! Representations and descriptions of wines by different groups of experts in a vineyard in full evolution : the Beaujola…
2022
The Beaujolais vineyard is today in full evolution thanks to a policy of upgrading and moving upmarket. This evolution leads to the development of new mentions within the vineyard. This evolution impacts the Beaujolais wines but also the wine experts who are in the heart of making, selling and promoting these wines. Wine expertise has been studied extensively over the past twenty years. Most studies have focused on experts as a unified group versus novices to understand the effect of expertise on the knowledge and abilities of experts. However, it appears that within this unity, there are several types of experts with different backgrounds, knowledge, experiences, and professions: wine make…
Measuring Distraction at the Levels of Tactical and Strategic Control: The Limits of Capacity-Based Measures for Revealing Unsafe Visual Sampling Mod…
2011
The control theory of driving suggests that driver distraction can be analyzed as a breakdown of control at three levels. Common approach for analyzing distraction experimentally is to utilize capacity-based measures to assess distraction at the level of operational control. Three driving simulation experiments with 61 participants were organized to evaluate which kind of measures could be used to analyze drivers' tactical visual sampling models and the related effects of distraction while searching textual information on in-car display. The effects of two different text types were evaluated. The utilized capacity-based measures seemed to be insufficient for revealing participants' tactical…
Emotions, Motives, Individuals, and Cultures in Interaction
2016
Cognitive aspects of the human mind form the foundations of solving usability problems. However, being able to use a technology is not the only critical psychological question in the design of successful HTI. In addition to understanding users’ capabilities, it is equally important to comprehend their preferences and what they want to accomplish with the help of technologies. Knowledge of the dynamic mind—in particular human emotions, motives, and personality—helps address such ‘liking and wanting’ concerns in HTI design.
Creative interpretation in web design experience
2017
Insight into how people mentally represent, and thus, make sense of visual designs is the key to understanding how people interact with technological devices. This paper presents a study in which participants were asked to write their interpretations of two webpage design examples, based on what they thought they would say and what would remain as a thought. The data comprised 80 3E templates (N = 40), a template allowing participants to express experiences through writing and drawing. Inductive data analysis through a phenomenological lens revealed that supposed mental and verbal representations concentrated on the following design properties: colors, themes, interface layout and quality, …
Transferencia inter-dominios en resolución de problemas : una propuesta instruccional basada en el proceso de «traducción algebraica»
2009
Understanding a science and math word problem means constructing mental representations at different levels of abstraction. Secondary students have dificulties solving algebraic word problems due to the transition from the concrete representation to the mathematic representation. In order to facilitate the «algebraic translation» of the problems, we adapt a «rule to put a problem into equations» by Puig (1998) and insert it in an experimental methodology devoted to improving the inter-domain transfer in science. Results show the power of the instructional methodology to overcome most of the students’ dificulties, no matters their average academic performance.
Autobiographical memory and the self in a single-case of chronic unilateral spatial neglect
2016
International audience; Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is mainly defined as a condition affecting perception and the mental representation of the environment. However, nothing is known about its impact on the ability to mentally represent one's past and on personal identity. We addressed these questions in a case of chronic USN, DR, a 59-year-old right-handed woman, who underwent a variety of measures exploring the self and autobiographical memory (AM). DR showed preserved self-images and her AM performance was only preserved when memories were prompted by her own self-images and not by self-unrelated cues. Our findings are discussed in light of the interconnection between the self and AM.
Symbolic Interactions : Towards a Cognitive Scientific Theory of Meaning in Human Technology Interaction
2015
Information technology has perpetuated the role of symbolism in everyday life practice, through its reliance on sign systems for its creation and operation. Increasingly attention has been placed on applying semiotic techniques to analyze user interface design and usability. Surprisingly, although the move towards symbolic interaction has been one of the most striking components of the digital shift, it has proven difficult to build bridges between semiotics and HTI-design thinking. In this article we argue that the problems in linking semiotic analysis of human technology interaction with modern HTI-design paradigms such as usability or user experience arise from a theoretical gap between …
Content-Based Approach in Exploring the Cognitive Structure of Values
2012
This article discusses the content-based approach in examination of values. In the content-based approach, human thinking in different contexts is set at the focal point, and attention is devoted to those cognitive processes through which mental representations are constructed. The information contents of mental representations play a decisive role in understanding human behavior. By applying content-based analysis to an examination of the conceptual contents of human values, it is possible to reach a deeper understanding of the cognitive structure which lies as the motivational foundation of actions. In this article, it is argued that different informational contents of values explain vari…
