Double pi(0) photoproduction off the proton at threshold

2003

The reaction $\gamma p \to \pi^0 \pi^0 p$ has been measured using the TAPS BaF$_2$ calorimeter at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron accelerator. Chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) predicts that close to threshold this channel is significantly enhanced compared to double pion final states with charged pions. In contrast to other reaction channels, the lower order tree terms are strongly suppressed in 2$\pi^0$ photoproduction. The consequence is the dominance of pion loops in the 2$\pi^0$ channel close to threshold - a result that opens new prospects for the test of ChPT and in particular its inherent loop terms. The present measurement is the first which is sensitive enough fo…

Elementary theory and brief history

1991

In the history of the theory of deuteron photodisintegration one may distinguish roughly three periods: (i) the primitive period of the elementary theory using very simple wave functions and forces and considering lowest multipoles (E1, M1) only, (ii) the classical period still in the framework f conventional nuclear physics, but using realstic forces with correspondingly elaborate wave functions and considering also higher multipole transitions, (ii) the post-classic period with explicit treatment of subnuclear degrees of freedom like meson and isobar degrees of freedom and very recently quark-gluon degrees of freedom.

Measurement of the Longitudinal, Transverse, and Longitudinal-Transverse Structure Functions in theH2(e,e′p)nReaction

1996

We have separated the longitudinal ({ital f}{sub 00}), transverse ({ital f}{sub 11}), and longitudinal-transverse interference ({ital f}{sub 01}) structure functions in the {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital p}){ital n} reaction at {ital q}{searrow}{parallel}{approx_equal} 400 MeV/{ital c} and {omega}{approx_equal}110 MeV. A nonrelativistic calculation which includes effects due to final state interactions, meson exchange currents, and isobar configurations agrees with the measured {ital f}{sub 11} and {ital f}{sub 01} but overpredicts {ital f}{sub 00} by 25{percent} (2{sigma}). The data are also compared to the results of previous structure function measurements. {copyright} {ital 1996…

Radiative Pion Photoproduction from the Proton and π + Meson Polarizabilities

1995

We study the possibility of investigating radiative pion photoproduction from the proton at the microtron MAMI-B with the aim to obtain an experimental information about the π + meson polarizabilities. It is shown that an exposition time of about 30 days will allow to determine the π + meson polarizability with quite high accuracy.

Theρ(ω)/B*(B) system and bound states in the unitary local Hidden Gauge approach

2016

In this work, we study systems composed of a ρ/ω and B* meson pair. We find three bound states in isospin, spin-parity channels (1/2, 0+ ), (1/2, 1+ ) and (1/2, 2+ ). The state with J = 2 can be a good candidate for the B * 2 (5747). We also study the ρB system, and a bound state with mass 5728 MeV and width around 20 MeV is obtained, which can be identified with the B 1 (5721) resonance. In the case of I = 3/2, one obtains repulsion and thus, no exotic (molecular) mesons in this sector are generated in the approach.

Measurement of the quadratic slope parameter in the K-L -> 3 pi(0) decay Dalitz plot

2001

A value of (-6.1 +- 0.9_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst})*10^{-3} is obtained for the quadratic slope parameter h in the K_L -> 3\pi^0 decay Dalitz plot at the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. The result is based on 14.7*10^6 fully reconstructed K_L -> 3\pi^0 -> 6\gamma decays. This is the most precise measurement of any of the Dalitz plot slope parameters in the charged and neutral kaon decays so far.

Confronting the impact parameter dependent JIMWLK evolution with HERA data

2018

The small-$x$ evolution of protons is determined from numerical solutions of the JIMWLK equations, starting from an initial condition at moderate $x$ for a finite size proton. The resulting dipole amplitude is used to calculate the total reduced cross section $\sigma_r$ and charm reduced cross section $\sigma_{rc}$, as well as diffractive vector meson production. We compare results to experimental data from HERA and discuss fundamental problems arising from the regime sensitive to non-perturbative physics. We emphasize that information on the gluonic content of the proton, gluon spatial distributions and correlations over wide ranges in $x$, which can in principle be constrained by our stud…

Generalized Nutbrown representation of the vector vertex function and the magnetic moment of the chargedρmeson

1975

A former representation of the vector vertex function, due to Nutbrown, is generalized. It is shown how this resolves an apparent contradiction between the effective-Lagrangian and hard-meson techniques. Further possible applications are discussed. (AIP)

Measuring the Chiralities of Weak b → c(u) Transitions in Exclusive B Meson Decays

1989

I discuss possibilities to measure the chirality of the weak b → c(u) transitions in exclusive bottom meson decays in (i) the exclusive semileptonic decay process B → D* + 1 + ν1 and (ii) in the exclusive nonleptonic decays of bottom mesons to baryon-antibaryon pairs.

Long-lived particles at the energy frontier: the MATHUSLA physics case

2019

We examine the theoretical motivations for long-lived particle (LLP) signals at the LHC in a comprehensive survey of Standard Model (SM) extensions. LLPs are a common prediction of a wide range of theories that address unsolved fundamental mysteries such as naturalness, dark matter, baryogenesis and neutrino masses, and represent a natural and generic possibility for physics beyond the SM (BSM). In most cases the LLP lifetime can be treated as a free parameter from the $\mu$m scale up to the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit of $\sim 10^7$m. Neutral LLPs with lifetimes above $\sim$ 100m are particularly difficult to probe, as the sensitivity of the LHC main detectors is limited by challenging …
