Large-angle production of charged pions by 3 GeV/c-12 GeV/c protons on carbon, copper and tin targets

A measurement of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross-section in proton-carbon, proton-copper and proton-tin collisions in the range of pion momentum 100 MeV/c <= p <800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 rad <= theta < 2.15 rad is presented. The data were taken with the HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN PS. The pions were produced by proton beams in a momentum range from 3 GeV/c to 12 GeV/c hitting a target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. The tracking and identification of the produced particles was done using a small-radius cylindrical time projection chamber (TPC) placed in a solenoidal magnet. Pion interaction with the trinucleon up to the eta production threshold

Pion elastic, charge exchange scattering and induced eta production on the trinucleon systems are investigated in a coupled-channels approach in momentum space with Fadeev wave functions. The channel $\pi N \rightarrow \eta N$ is included using an isobar model with S-, P-, and D-wave resonances. While the coherent reactions like $^3$He($\pi,\pi)^3$He can be reasonably well reproduced up to $T_{\pi}$=500 MeV, large discrepancies appear for the incoherent processes, $^3$He($\pi^-,\pi^0)^3$H and $^3$He($\pi^-,\eta)^3$H at backward angles and energies above $\Delta$-resonance. Status and prospects of Rn measurements at Mainz

Parity-violating electron scattering is particularly sensitive to the neutron density. The recent PREX experiment at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) has demonstrated the feasibility of this method meanwhile outlining its major experimental challenges. On the other side intermediate energy photons are an ideal probe for studying the properties of strongly interacting matter from the nuclear scale down to the sub-nuclear components of the nucleus. Suppression of away-side jet fragments with respect to the reaction plane in Au + Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

Pair correlations between large transverse momentum neutral pion triggers (p(T) = 4-7 GeV/c) and charged hadron partners (p(T) = 3-7 GeV/c) in central (0%-20%) and midcentral (20%-60%) Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are presented as a function of trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. The particles are at larger momentum than where jet shape modifications have been observed, and the correlations are sensitive to the energy loss of partons traveling through hot densematter. An out-of-plane trigger particle produces only 26 +/- 20% of the away-side pairs that are observed opposite of an in-plane trigger particle for midcentral (20%-60%) collisions. In contrast, ne…

The relativistic pionic stripping formalism is used to study pion production data on $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ and $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ in order to determine the appropriate form of the pion-nucleon vertex and to determine whether pionic stripping is the dominant mechanism for pion production.

Inclusive eta photoproduction in nuclei.

A local model for the nuclear medium modifications to the photoproduction of \ensuremath{\eta} mesons through the ${\mathit{N}}^{\mathrm{*}}$(1535) resonance is applied to the study of the inclusive reaction in medium and heavy nuclei. The use of effective Lagrangians and many body quantum theory allows one to incorporate the nuclear decay channels of the ${\mathit{N}}^{\mathrm{*}}$ involving a pair of nucleons and Fermi sea effects. Also the \ensuremath{\eta}N final state interaction is considered, taking into account the nuclear renormalization of the \ensuremath{\eta}N scattering cross section, and assuming a classical propagation between collisions. Measurement of the partial cross sectionsσTT,σLT, and(σT+ɛσL)of the1H(e,e′π+)nreaction in theΔ(1232)resonance

We report precision {sup 1}H(e, e{sup '{pi}+})n measurements in the {Delta}(1232) resonance at Q{sup 2}=0.127(GeV/c){sup 2} obtained at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. These are the lowest, but nonzero, Q{sup 2} measurements in the {pi}{sup +} channel. The data offer tests of the theoretical calculations, particularly of the background amplitude contributions. The chiral effective field theory and Sato-Lee model calculations are not in agreement with this experiment.

Photoproduction of $ \pi^{0}$ -pairs off protons and off neutrons

2015

Total cross sections, angular distributions, and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for the photoproduction of $\pi^0\pi^0$ pairs off free protons and off nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator facility in Mainz using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector. The accelerator delivered electron beams of 1508 and 1557~MeV, which produced bremsstrahlung in thin radiator foils. The tagged photon beam covered energies up to 1400~MeV. Forward-AngleH3e(e,e′π±)Coincident Electroproduction and the Search forΔ's in the Ground State ofH3e

Forward-angle coincident electroproduction cross sections of charged pions from ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ have been measured at electron energies ${E}_{0}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}855$, 675, 600, and 555 MeV. The overall features of the data for energy transfers of $\ensuremath{\omega}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}370$ to 430 MeV with pions detected along the momentum transfer axis are reproduced in terms of a microscopic model, including pole terms, final state rescattering and produced and preformed $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ resonances. Measurement of the p(γ,π^{0}) cross section at threshold

Differential and absolute cross sections for the reaction {ital p}({gamma},{pi}{sup 0}) have been measured with energy-defined photons in the threshold region ({ital E}{sub {gamma}}=131.4--157.2 MeV). The {ital E}{sub 0+} amplitude has been extracted out of the data. The values found are in disagreement with predictions of low-energy theorems.
