Collective amplitude mode fluctuations in a flat band superconductor formed at a semimetal surface
2016
We study the fluctuations of the amplitude (i.e. the Higgs-Anderson) mode in a superconducting system of coupled Dirac particles proposed as a model for possible surface or interface superconductivity in rhombohedral graphite. This system also serves as a generic model of a topological semimetal with an interaction driven transition on its surface. We show that the absence of Fermi energy and vanishing of the excitation gap of the collective amplitude mode in the model leads to a large fluctuation contribution to thermodynamic quantities such as the heat capacity. As a consequence, the mean-field theory becomes inaccurate indicating that the interactions lead to a strongly correlated state.…
Sorption and mechanism studies of Cu2+, Sr2+ and Pb2+ ions on mesoporous aluminosilicates/zeolite composite sorbents
2020
The research aimed to develop a novel mesoporous aluminosilicate/zeolite composite by the template co-precipitation method. The effect of aluminosilicate (AlSi) and zeolite (NaY) on the basic properties and adsorption capacity of the resultant composite was conducted at different mass ratios of AlSi/NaY (i.e., 5/90, 10/80, 15/85, 20/80, and 50/50). The adsorption characteristics of such composite and its feedstock materials (i.e., aluminosilicates and zeolite) towards radioactive Sr2+ ions and toxic metals (Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions) in aqueous solutions was investigated. Results indicated that BET surface area (SBET), total pore volume (VTotal), and mesopore volume (VMeso) of prepared materials f…
Hyperspectral Imaging of Macroinvertebrates : a Pilot Study for Detecting Metal Contamination in Aquatic Ecosystems
2018
The applicability of spectral analysis in detection of freshwater metal contamination was assessed by developing and testing a novel hyperspectral imaging (HSI) application for aquatic insect larvae (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae). Larvae were first exposed to four different cadmium (Cd) concentrations: 0, 1, 10, and 100 μg L−1 for 96 h. Individual larvae were then preserved in ethanol, inspected with microscopy for the number of anomalies in larval gills, and imaged by hyperspectral camera operating with wavebands between 500 and 850 nm. Three additional larvae from each exposure were analyzed for tissue Cd concentration. Although the larval tissue Cd concentrations correlated positively wit…
Kuparin, hopean ja palladiumin talteenotto piirilevyjätteestä
2017
Rikkihappo on yleisin teollisuudessa käytetty happoliuotin, …
Method development for determination and recovery of rare earth elements from industrial fly ash
2014
Rare earth elements (REE) are important in numerous high technology applications and in addition their supply risk is high, which gives rise to studying new sources for rare earth elements. Rare earth element concentrations in industrial fly ash samples collected from Finnish power plants, using a mixture of peat and biomass as a fuel, have been determined. Two sample pre-treatment methods, ultrasound- and microwave-assisted acid digestions, have been applied to fly ash samples. Measurement conditions for inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP–OES) have been optimized to reach robust plasma conditions and the reliability of the analysis has been investigated by using …
Separation of palladium and silver from E-waste leachate : effect of nitric acid concentration on adsorption to Thiol scavenger
2022
The development of recovery techniques for metals present in low concentrations in E-waste, such as silver and palladium, is important from the aspect of the circular economy. Adsorption of palladium and silver was studied in detail in a batch process with silica-based Thiol scavenger from nitric acid leachate of waste printed circuit boards (PCBs). High adsorption efficiencies of Pd(II) and Ag(I), >97%, were reached in nitric acid concentrations below 3 mol L−1. At higher acid concentrations, adsorption efficiency of Ag(I) decreased drastically which enables the separation of Ag(I) and Pd(II) based on nitric acid concentration in sample solution. Pd(II) and Ag(I) followed pseudo 2nd order …

Synthesis and characterization of Zwitterionic Zn(II) and Cu(II) coordination compounds with ring-substituted 2,2′-biimidazole derivatives
2016
Zwitterionic coordination compounds with strongly asymmetrical charge distribution were synthesized and characterized. Ring-substituted biimidazoles were used as the primary ligands for Zn and Cu compounds. Formation of Zwitterionic coordination compound was found to be strongly dependent on the pH of the reaction medium as well as on the ring and nitrogen substituents of the ligand. Reaction of the Df-R2biim (Df-R2biim = 2,2′-bi-1R-imidazole-5,5′-dicarboxaldehyde, R = Me, Et or Pr) with ZnCl2 in neutral conditions led to binuclear compounds [Zn2Cl4(Df-R2biim)2] with two bridging ligands (1a–c). Reaction with CuCl2·2H2O gave neutral mononuclear compound [CuCl2(Df-Me2biim)] (1d) with chelati…
Zinc Adsorption by Activated Carbon Prepared from Lignocellulosic Waste Biomass
2019
Sawdust was used as a precursor for the production of biomass-based activated carbon. Carbonization and activation are single-stage processes, and steam was used as a physical activation agent at 800 °
