STATUS OF STRANGENESS ELECTRO-PRODUCTION AT MAMI
2009
At the Institut für Kernphysik in Mainz, Germany, the microtron MAMI has been upgraded to 1.5 GeV electron beam energy and can now be used to study strange hadronic systems. The magnetic spectrometer KAOS from GSI was dismantled and re-installed in the spectrometer facility operated by the A1 collaboration. The spectrometer's primary purpose is to study strangeness electro-production. Its compact design and its capability to detect negative and positive charged particles simultaneously under forward scattering angles complements the existing spectrometers. In 2008, an important milestone has been reached by the successful measurement of kaon production off a liquid hydrogen target. The ide…
The NEXT Project: Towards Production and Investigation of Neutron-Rich Heavy Nuclides
2022
The heaviest actinide elements are only accessible in accelerator-based experiments on a one-atom-at-a-time level. Usually, fusion–evaporation reactions are applied to reach these elements. However, access to the neutron-rich isotopes is limited. An alternative reaction mechanism to fusion–evaporation is multinucleon transfer, which features higher cross-sections. The main drawback of this technique is the wide angular distribution of the transfer products, which makes it challenging to catch and prepare them for precision measurements. To overcome this obstacle, we are building the NEXT experiment: a solenoid magnet is used to separate the different transfer products and to focus those of …
An off-line ion guide quadrupole mass spectrometer system
2017
Off-line ioniohjain kvadrupolimassaspektrometri systeemi. The commissioning of a new off-line ion guide quadrupole mass …
MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS FOR EVALUATING THE EFFECTS OF WEDM CUTTING PARAMETERS
2020
Wire Electrical Discharge Machining is a cutting method used for obtaining parts with complex geometries or for cutting hard metals. In machining processes, it is necessary to obtain the desired surface quality in order to produce parts providing the required functioning. The surface quality also defines some mechanical properties of the product, such as wear resistance. Being such a considerable quality, surface quality is influenced by various parameters. It will be costly and time consuming to acquire the knowledge of appropriate cutting parameters. Unconventional technologies have not been sufficiently studied so far to provide such details. So, this рарer ѕeekѕ to emрhаѕіze the іmрortа…
All-Possible-Couplings Approach to Measuring Probabilistic Context
2013
From behavioral sciences to biology to quantum mechanics, one encounters situations where (i) a system outputs several random variables in response to several inputs, (ii) for each of these responses only some of the inputs may ‘‘directly’’ influence them, but (iii) other inputs provide a ‘‘context’’ for this response by influencing its probabilistic relations to other responses. These contextual influences are very different, say, in classical kinetic theory and in the entanglement paradigm of quantum mechanics, which are traditionally interpreted as representing different forms of physical determinism. One can mathematically construct systems with other types of contextuality, whether or …
6-Amino-2-(pivaloylamino)pyridinium benzoate
2013
In the crystal structure of the title salt, C10H16N3O+·C7H5O2−, the cations and anions are linked to each other via N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming infinite chains running along [010]. The crystal structure also features C—H⋯O and π–π stacking interactions, which assemble the chains into supramolecular layers parallel to (100). The π–π stacking interactions are observed between the pyridine rings of inversion-related cations with a centroid–centroid distance of 3.867 (2) Å. Financial support from the National Science Centre in Kraków (grant No. NCN204 356840) is gratefully acknowledged. Academy Professor Kari Rissanen (Academy of Finland grant Nos. 122350, 140718, 265328 and 263256) and th…
SPI/INTEGRAL in-flight performance
2003
The SPI instrument has been launched on-board the INTEGRAL observatory on October 17, 2002. SPI is a spectrometer devoted to the sky observation in the 20 keV-8 MeV energy range using 19 germanium detectors. The performance of the cryogenic system is nominal and allows to cool the 19 kg of germanium down to 85 K with a comfortable margin. The energy resolution of the whole camera is 2.5 keV at 1.1 MeV. This resolution degrades with time due to particle irradiation in space. We show that the annealing process allows the recovery of the initial performance. The anticoincidence shield works as expected, with a low threshold at 75 keV, reducing the GeD background by a factor of 20. The digital …
Dynamic Force Production Capacities Between Coronary Artery Disease Patients vs. Healthy Participants on a Cycle Ergometer
2020
Background: The force-velocity-power (FVP) profile is used to describe dynamic force production capacities, which is of great interest in training high performance athletes. However, FVP may serve a new additional tool for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. The aim of this study was to compare the FVP profile between two populations: CAD patients vs. healthy participants (HP). Methods: Twenty-four CAD patients (55.8 ± 7.1 y) and 24 HP (52.4 ± 14.8 y) performed two sprints of 8 s on a Monark cycle ergometer with a resistance corresponding to 0.4 N/kg × body mass for men and 0.3 N/kg × body mass for women. The theoretical maximal force (F 0) and velocity (V…
Motor unit discharge rate in dynamic movements of the aging soleus
2014
Aging is related to changes at the muscular level, leading to a decline in motor performance increasing the risk of falling and injury. It seems that the age-related changes in motor unit activation are muscle- and intensity dependent. The purpose of this study was to examine possible differences in soleus motor unit discharge rate (MUDR) in both isometric and dynamic contractions between young and elderly adults. 11 young (YOUNG) and 8 elderly (OLD) males participated in the study. The subjects performed isometric and dynamic plantar flexions while seated in an ankle dynamometer. The force levels studied were 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of the isometric (ISO) MVC in ISO and 10, 20 and 40% …
Changes of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (Ace) Levels During Activation of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAs)
1987
The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of ACE levels during RAAs activation induced by: 1) a continuous graded bicycle ergometer test performed in a group of 15 males health youths aged between 21 and 30 years, with average age of 25.8 +/- 2.85 years; 2) i.m. injection of 20 mg of frusemide in 11 health youths (10 males and 1 female), aged between 20 and 30 years, with average age of 24.09 +/- 2.77 years; 3) dialytic treatment in 25 patients (12 males and 13 females), suffering from chronic renal failure, aged between 26 and 68 years, with average age of 54 +/- 15.42 years. Plasmatic renin activity (PRA), aldosterone (ALD) and ACE levels were determined by RIA in basal conditions…
