Solution of coupled riccati equations occurring in nash games

2006

To obtain the open-loop Nash strategy for a linear-quadratic differential game, a set of coupled matrix Riccati equations has to be solved. It is shown that by means of algebraic transformations, the original problem can be reduced to another one to which the successive approximation method is applicable. This leads to a simple iterative algorithm with a predetermined approximation error. An example is given to illustrate the proposed method.

A Parallel Approach for Statistical Texture Parameter Calculation

2014

This chapter focusses on the development of a new image processing technique for the processing of large and complex images, especially SAR images. We propose here a new and effective approach that outperforms the existing methods for the calculation of high order textural parameters. With a single processor, this approach is about \(256^{n-1}\) times faster than the co-occurrence matrix approach considered as classical, where \(n\) is the order of the textural parameter for a 256-gray scales image. In a parallel environment made of N processor, this performance can almost be multiply by the factor N. Our approach is based on a new modeling of textural parameters of a generic order \(n>1\) …

Construction of a fundamental set of solutions of an arbitrary homogeneous linear difference equation

2002

Abstract The detailed construction of a prefixed fundamental set of solutions of a linear homogeneous difference equation of any order with arbitrarily variable coefficients is reported. The usefulness of the resulting resolutive formula is illustrated by simple applications to the Hermite polynomials and to the Fibonacci sequence.

A SYNTHETIC MEASURE FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECT PERFORMANCE

2009

The present paper aims to offer a synthetic project performance indicator (PPI) that aggregates two input parameters obtained by the Earned Value Analysis. The PPI is calculated by using a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) able to single out a measure based on the input parameters, instead of formulating a mathematical model that could be a troublesome task whenever complex relations among the input variables exist. The purpose is to communicate the project performance to the stakeholders in a clear and complete way, for example, describing the PPI by means of contour lines.

UML-Based Metamodeling for Information System Engineering and Evolution

2003

In modelers’ practice metamodels have become the core of UML-based metamodeling environments: metamodels form the basis of application domain descriptions, and they are instantiated into models. In the context of information system engineering and interoperability, we have developped two operations on metamodels: metamodel integration and measure of semantical distance between metamodels. In this paper, we explore application of these operations to information systems’ evolution.

Path integral solution handled by Fast Gauss Transform

2009

Abstract The path integral solution method is an effective tool for evaluating the response of non-linear systems under Normal White Noise, in terms of probability density function (PDF). In this paper it has been observed that, using short-time Gaussian approximation, the PDF at a given time instant is the Gauss Transform of the PDF at an earlier close time instant. Taking full advantage of the so-called Fast Gauss Transform a new integration method is proposed. In order to overcome some unsatisfactory trends of the classical Fast Gauss Transform, a new version termed as Symmetric Fast Gauss Transform is also proposed. Moreover, extensions to the two Fast Gauss Transform to MDOF systems ar…

Search strategies for ensemble feature selection in medical diagnostics

2003

The goal of this paper is to propose, evaluate, and compare four search strategies for ensemble feature selection, and to consider their application to medical diagnostics, with a focus on the problem of the classification of acute abdominal pain. Ensembles of learnt models constitute one of the main current directions in machine learning and data mining. Ensembles allow us to get higher accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, which are often not achievable with single models. One technique, which proved to be effective for ensemble construction, is feature selection. Lately, several strategies for ensemble feature selection were proposed, including random subspacing, hill-climbing-based se…

Towards Technology-Supported Surgical Training

2008

Technology offers alternatives for training surgeons with patients and also possibilities to take part in surgical learning from afar, outside the operating room (OR). Simulated and other technical training tools provide opportunities to practice surgical skills in undisturbed learning environments. In order to implement effective educational methods and create new environments for learning, we need to find out what skills a surgeon must learn and what are the elements affecting surgical performance. This paper describes a study designed to investigate surgical processes and presents an exploratory way of gathering data by combining video material with interviews. The suitability of triangu…

Application of a self-learning methodology for the enhancement of the oral communication student outcome in International Business studies

2019

[EN] Effective oral communication is one of the most demanded student outcomes in the labour market, especially for degree students on International Business. Although this outcome is usually evaluated in several subjects along the curriculum, it is barely worked neither inside nor outside the classroom, mainly due to lack of time and to unavailability of proper learning methodologies. The PIMECOE project, an innovation and educational improvement project on this matter, has developed a self-learning methodology on the Effective Oral Communication student outcome, in which auto-diagnosis tests, selflearning tools and peer assessments are conveniently combined to enhance the proficiency leve…

Analysis of the main weaknesses of university students regarding the "effective oral communication" student outcome

2019

[EN] The "Effective oral communication" is one of the most demanded student outcomes in the workplace, since being a good communicator is essential in any field. Inefficient communication can lead to misinterpretations and erroneous conclusions. Therefore, it is a very important student outcome both in the university and in the workplace. The student or graduate must know how to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, appropriately using the necessary resources and adapting to the characteristics of the situation and the audience. However, despite its importance, the disparity in the mastery level of the oral communication student outcome by students makes it difficult to work …
