Health-Related Quality of Life Is Severely Affected in Primary Orthostatic Tremor

2018

International audience; Background: Primary orthostatic tremor (POT) is a movement disorder characterized by unsteadiness upon standing still due to a tremor affecting the legs. It is a gradually progressive condition with limited treatment options. Impairments in health-related quality of life (HQoL) seem to far exceed the physical disability associated with the condition. Methods: A multi-center, mixed-methodology study was undertaken to investigate 40 consecutive patients presenting with POT to four movement disorder centers in France. HQoL was investigated using eight quantitative scales and a qualitative study which employed semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed wit…

Methodology for high-quality studies on course and prognosis of inflammatory bowel disease.

2012

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are characterized by a chronic course with an alternation of relapses and remissions. Questions about prognosis are important for the patient who wants to know how the disease will affect his/her life and also for clinicians to make management decisions. Correct selection of the patients is the basis for good methodological studies on the course of IBD. A great proportion of data on the course of IBD is derived from a limited number of cohort studies. Studies help to define the endpoints for clinical trials and to identify subsets of patients in whom the prognosis of the disease can be stratified according to clinical features. Specific scientific requirem…

Endocrine Disruptors and Autism Spectrum Disorder in Pregnancy: A Review and Evaluation of the Quality of the Epidemiological Evidence

2018

Exposure to environmental contaminants during pregnancy has been linked to adverse health outcomes later in life. Notable among these pollutants are the endocrine disruptors chemicals (EDCs), which are ubiquitously present in the environment and they have been measured and quantified in the fetus. In this systematic review, our objective was to summarize the epidemiological research on the potential association between prenatal exposure to EDCs and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) published from 2005 to 2016. The Navigation Guide Systematic Review Methodology was applied. A total of 17 studies met the inclusion criteria for this review, including: five cohorts and 12 case-control. According t…

Evaluating the statistical methodology of randomized trials on dentin hypersensitivity management

2017

The present study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and quality of statistical methodology used in clinical studies on dentin hypersensitivity management. An electronic search was performed for data published from 2009 to 2014 by using PubMed, Ovid/MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases. The primary search terms were used in combination. Eligibility criteria included randomized clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy of desensitizing agents in terms of reducing dentin hypersensitivity. A total of 40 studies were considered eligible for assessment of quality statistical methodology. The four main concerns identified were i) use of nonparametric tests in the presence of large samples…

Methodologies to study soil nitrogen Méthodes pour l'étude de l'azote dans le sol Metodologie per lo studio dell'azoto nel suolo

2011

Nitrogen (N) is a key element within terrestrial ecosystems and, thus, the whole knowledge of its transformation processes is crucial. Especially in soil, complex and heterogeneous system, N undergoes several transformations as it is indicated by its various oxidation states. Moreover, it mainly occurs under a number of organic forms, whose identification and quantification is still challenging. Here, we review some extraction methodologies of N from soil, but also the isotope dilution technique, which helps in assessing gross N mineralisation. Finally, we discuss the NanoSIMS technique, which shows a good potential for investigating soil N dynamics at nanoscale. Résumé L'azote (N) est un é…

Methodological approaches for the enhancement of cultural heritage

2012

The subject of this essay starts by considering how, in many cases, artificial lighting outlines such as finding an “impalpable material” which helps to understand and enhance the ancient contexts. In general, it was demonstrated that, combining innovative technologies, light can be used to change the world, to shape cities, as well as architecture and space in general. Light can turn into concrete matter both in interiors, in archaeological and urban spaces. There is the possibility to obtain a recovery of memory and identity of a city, in order to achieve efficiency and effectiveness of the results. Starting with an overview of experimental research methodology it is possible to define an…

The methods and techniques of the research on war and conflicts. The outline of the issue

2018

The aim of this paper is to present the methodological assumptions necessary to examine the wars and conflicts. Authors refer to the genesis of the research on the phenomenon of war that occurred after the end of World War II. Moreover, the authors selects the research methods. The wide range of research methods will be applied in international relations, such as an empirical report, based on the description of the various conflicts and their interpretation. It must be emphasized that methodological technique applied in humanities and empirical sciences is necessary to examine war and peace. Above all, two methods are the most important, that is, inductionism that allows to collect and logi…
