A computational magnetohydrodynamic model of a marine propulsion system

2016

In this article we present an approach to the description of Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion. Preliminarly, an analytical model which includes an electromagnetic model and a thermal model is presented. Successively, in order to move beyond the analytical model, a 3-D MHD modeling tool and a Runge Kutta method based solver are presented and they are used to investigate an alternative MHD solutions. Some numerical analysis are given.

Role of Chiral Two-Body Currents in Li6 Magnetic Properties in Light of a New Precision Measurement with the Relative Self-Absorption Technique

2021

A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited ${0}_{1}^{+}$ state of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma},{0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1}_{1}^{+}}=8.17(14{)}_{\mathrm{stat}.}(11{)}_{\mathrm{syst}.}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. This enables a precision test of the im…

Tensor Network Annealing Algorithm for Two-Dimensional Thermal States

2019

Tensor network methods have become a powerful class of tools to capture strongly correlated matter, but methods to capture the experimentally ubiquitous family of models at finite temperature beyond one spatial dimension are largely lacking. We introduce a tensor network algorithm able to simulate thermal states of two-dimensional quantum lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. The method develops instances of projected entangled pair states and projected entangled pair operators for this purpose. It is the key feature of this algorithm to resemble the cooling down of the system from an infinite temperature state until it reaches the desired finite-temperature regime. As a benchmark we …

APXS and MIMOS IIA: Planetary and terrestrial applications

2011

Both Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and the Miniaturized Moessbauer Spectrometer (MIMOS II) have shown their performances in space missions and terrestrial applications. Taking advantage of the challenges of space missions both instruments have become very powerful tools, even small in mass and dimensions.

Precision Test of Many-Body QED in theBe+2pFine Structure Doublet Using Short-Lived Isotopes

2015

Absolute transition frequencies of the $2s\text{ }{^{2}S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2p\text{ }{^{2}P}_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in ${\mathrm{Be}}^{+}$ were measured for the isotopes $^{7,9--12}\mathrm{Be}$. The fine structure splitting of the $2p$ state and its isotope dependence are extracted and compared to results of ab initio calculations using explicitly correlated basis functions, including relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects at the order of $m{\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{6}$ and $m{\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{7} \mathrm{ln} \ensuremath{\alpha}$. Accuracy has been improved in both the theory and experiment by 2 orders of magnitude, and good agreement is observed. This represents on…

Analysis method for detecting topological defect dark matter with a global magnetometer network

2019

Abstract The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME) is a network of time-synchronized, geographically separated, optically pumped atomic magnetometers that is being used to search for correlated transient signals heralding exotic physics. GNOME is sensitive to exotic couplings of atomic spins to certain classes of dark matter candidates, such as axions. This work presents a data analysis procedure to search for axion dark matter in the form of topological defects: specifically, walls separating domains of discrete degenerate vacua in the axion field. An axion domain wall crossing the Earth creates a distinctive signal pattern in the network that can be d…

Constraining exotic interactions

2018

Beyond-the-standard-model interactions mediated by an exchange of virtual "new" bosons result in a finite set of possible effective interaction potentials between standard-model particles such as electrons and nucleons. We discuss the classification of such potentials and briefly review recent experiments searching for such exotic interactions at spatial scales from sub-nanometers to tens of thousand kilometers.

Upgrading gSeaGen: from MeV to PeV neutrinos

2021

The gSeaGen framework has been upgraded to simulate events detectable in neutrino telescopes induced by neutrino or cosmic ray interactions. The new version is well-suited to generate neutrino interactions at energies from a few MeV to EeV, profiting from the latest GENIE extensions to lower and higher energies. In addition, a brand new functionality to propagate leptons from CORSIKA air showers has been developed. Novel features of gSeaGen will be presented, related to simulation of PeV tau neutrinos and charged lepton propagation, using the KM3NeT detectors as physics case.
