Design of a basic system of indicators for monitoring and evaluating Spanish Cooperation's Culture and Development Strategy.

2012

Objective: This article describes the process implemented in order to define and build up a Basic Monitoring and Evaluation System for Spanish Cooperation’s Culture and Development Strategy (CD-S). Research Design: Delphi techniques were used to assess a wide catalogue of indicators for each of the strategic areas included in the CD-S. Afterward, those indicators considered most suitable for monitoring and evaluating purposes were selected based on the assessments provided by a panel of experts. Results: As a consequence, the resulting system, made up by a total of 80 indicators, was designed to be a practical, manageable, and targeted tool for its potential users, who include managers and …

Services for Young Children and Families: Evaluating Intervention Cycles

1996

To advance the national early intervention agenda, priority must be assigned to the evaluation of services for families of infants and young children with developmental disabilities. This priority for evaluation rests on current considerations for accountability to families, accountability to fundin

Characterization of the atmospheric muon flux in IceCube

2015

Muons produced in atmospheric cosmic ray showers account for the by far dominant part of the event yield in large-volume underground particle detectors. The IceCube detector, with an instrumented volume of about a cubic kilometer, has the potential to conduct unique investigations on atmospheric muons by exploiting the large collection area and the possibility to track particles over a long distance. Through detailed reconstruction of energy deposition along the tracks, the characteristics of muon bundles can be quantified, and individual particles of exceptionally high energy identified. The data can then be used to constrain the cosmic ray primary flux and the contribution to atmospheric …

Step-along power vector method for astigmatic wavefront propagation

2013

Purpose To propose both a new algebraic solution and a graphical monitoring method for astigmatic wavefront propagation in the framework provided by power vectors. Methods The generalised propagation equation describing the propagation of astigmatic wavefronts from one plane to another is adapted to the power vectors formalism using a novel algorithm based on a step-along method. The step-along procedure is directly applied to the tuple of power vectors [M, J0, J45] representing an arbitrary astigmatic wavefront and it permits the calculation of the tuple of power vectors [M′, J′0, J′45] after a given propagation distance. This is achieved mathematically first by temporarily rotating the as…

Examination of the least-squares method applied to the evaluation of physicochemical parameters with linearized equations

1989

Physicochemical parameters are frequently evaluated by the least-squares method after linearization of the equation which relates the experimental variables to the parameters of interest. When a given set of data is treated to evaluate (n+1) parameters. (n+2) nominally identical linearized equations are possible; each of these leads to different sets of values of the parameters which are also affected by different variances. These differences are also observed when statistical weights are used. Two methods for establishing which one of the (n+2) equations is best for fitting the data, i.e., simulation of experiments and propagation of errors, are discussed, compared and applied to a potenti…

Investigating the causal mechanisms underlying the customization of software development methods

2017

Over the last four decades, software development has been one of the mainstream topics in the Software Engineering and Information Systems disciplines. Thousands of methods have been put forward offering prescriptions for software development processes. The goal of these methods is to produce high-quality software in a systematic manner. However, it is widely known that these methods are rarely followed as prescribed – developers often modify or skip different steps, practices, or quality rules recommended by software development methods. While a group of previous studies suggests that maximizing the flexibility and leanness of software development processes is the key driver of such custom…

Conformational investigation of alpha,beta-dehydropeptides. VIII. N-acetyl-alpha,beta-dehydroamino acid N'-methylamides: conformation and electron de…

2009

The Fourier transform infrared spectra are analyzed in the regions of Vs(N-H), amide I, amide II and Vs(C alpha = C beta) bands for a series of Ac-delta Xaa-NHMe, where delta Xaa = delta Ala, (Z)-delta Abu, (Z)-delta Leu, (Z)-delta Phe and delta Val, to determine the predominant solution conformation of these alpha,beta-dehydropeptide-related molecules and the electron distribution perturbation in their amide bonds. The measurements were performed in dichloromethane (DCM). To confirm and rationalize the assignments, the spectra of the respective series of saturated Ac-Xaa-NHMe, recorded in DCM, and the spectra of these two series of unsaturated and saturated compounds, recorded in acetonitr…

Assessing the low complexity of protein sequences via the low complexity triangle.

2020

Background Proteins with low complexity regions (LCRs) have atypical sequence and structural features. Their amino acid composition varies from the expected, determined proteome-wise, and they do not follow the rules of structural folding that prevail in globular regions. One way to characterize these regions is by assessing the repeatability of a sequence, that is, calculating the local propensity of a region to be part of a repeat. Results We combine two local measures of low complexity, repeatability (using the RES algorithm) and fraction of the most frequent amino acid, to evaluate different proteomes, datasets of protein regions with specific features, and individual cases of proteins…
