Eva Kallio tutki väitöskirjatyössään ihmisissä myyräkuumetta aiheuttavan, Hantaviruksiin kuuluvan Puumala-viruksen ja sen isäntälajin metsämyyrän välistä vuorovaikutussuhdetta. Tutkimuksessa selvisi viruksen säilyvän infektiokykyisenä pitkään isännän ulkopuolellakin ja voivan tarttua myyrästä toiseen tai myyrästä ihmiseen ilman suoraa kontaktia. Kallio osoitti myös ensimmäisen kerran hantaviruksen olevan haitallinen isäntälajilleen.Kallion osoittaman Puumala-viruksen ja metsämyyrän välisen vuorovaikutussuhteen piirteet voivat osaltaan vaikuttaa ihmisten myyräkuume-epidemioiden ilmentymiseen. This study aimed to characterise pressurised hot water (PHW) extracts from nonconventional sources of functional carbohydrates and phenolic compounds in terms of antioxidant capacity, antiviral activity, toxicity, and human erythrocytes’ protection antidiabetic potential. PHW extracts of Norway spruce bark (E1 + E2) and Birch sawdust (E3 + E4) contained mostly galactoglucomannan and glucuronoxylan. In contrast, samples E5 to E9 PHW extracted from Norway spruce, and Scots pine bark are rich sources of phenolic compounds. Uneven-aged forest management has attained increasing popularity. It may benefit biodiversity, buffer against pests and abiotic damages, decrease runoff from clearcuts and improve recreational values. We studied how gap cuttings and single-tree selection cuttings influence browsing damage in spruce-dominated forests in south-central Finland. Overall, browsing damage was especially frequent in aspen and rowan, but also in birch. The larger the basal area left in harvesting, the lower the browsing pressure on birch and rowan; neither the harvesting method nor the seedling density had an independent effect on browsing damage. Modelling competences and anticipating the future competence needs in the forest sector

This explorative study examined practices of competence modelling in the forest sector organisations and how organisations anticipate changes in competence needs in the future. Semi-structured in-depth interviews (n=10) were conducted amongst forest sector experts in Finland and data was analysed by thematic analysis. The findings showed that the practices of modelling competences were diverse, most frequently used ones being superior-subordinate review discussions and quantitative competence surveys. The current magnitude of big-game hunting has outpaced the natural growth of populations, making artificial breeding necessary to rapidly boost hunted populations. In this study, we evaluated if the rapid increase of red deer (Cervus elaphus) abundance, caused by the growing popularity of big-game hunting, has impacted the natural genetic diversity of the species. We compared several genetic diversity metrics between 37 fenced populations subject to intensive management and 21 wild free-ranging populations. Šī pētījuma mērķis ir izpētīt ciešamās kārtas lietojumu ilgtspējas pārskatos no uzņēmumiem, kas darbojas automobiļu ražošana industrijā. Pētījums apskata trīs ciešamās kārtas aspektus – kādas funkcijas ciešamā kārta veic ilgtspējas pārskatos, laika-aspekta attiecības un teikuma priekšmeta ar by izmantošanu vai izlaišanu ciešamajā kārtā. Teorētisko pētījumu ietvaru veido sekundāro avotu pārskats. Diskursa analīze ir izmantota kā empīriskā pētniecības metode un sastāv no ciešamās kārtas kvalitatīvās un kvantitatīvās analīzes ilgtspēju pārskatos.
