Self-care and total care: the twofold return of care in twentieth-century thought

The paper studies two fundamentally different forms in which the concept of care makes its comeback in twentieth-century thought. We make use of a distinction made by Peter Sloterdijk, who argues that the ancient and medieval ‘ascetic’ ideal of self-enhancement through practice has re-emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly in the form of a rehabilitation of the Hellenistic notion of self-care (epimeleia heautou) in Michel Foucault’s late ethics. Celem artykułu jest pogłębiona analiza wizerunku kobiet w polskiej reality TV, przeprowadzona przy użyciu kategorii biopolityki Michela Foucaulta, uzupełnionej przez myśl Marksowską i marksistowską. Tekst składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy dotyczy show Superniania, które pomogło zwrócić uwagę na kwestię biowładzy w sferze reprodukcji. Drugi rozdział omawia show randkowe, Hotel Paradise i Love Island. Wyspa Miłości, poruszając zagadnienia seksu i miłości. Ostatnia część skupia się na programie Damy i wieśniaczki, który pokazuje klasowy wymiar sprawowania biowładzy nad kobietami.

Michel Foucault’s (1926–1984) thought is widely used in the humanities and social sciences for investigating experiences of madness, illness, marginalization and social conflicts. However, the meaning of the word “experience” is not always clearly defined, and the French word expérience has a whole variety of meanings. In this article I explicate Foucault’s most relevant concepts of experience and their theoretical functions. He refers to experience throughout his career, especially in his early texts on existential psychiatry from the 1950s and 1960s and in his late work from the 1980s. Ainsi, l’exclusion que réalise l’emprisonnement pratiqué actuellement en France traduit concrètement, par sa passivité et sa quête de neutralité, l’imaginaire du contrat social, attestant que l’abolition de la peine de mort n’a pas encore fait l’objet d’une réception pleine et entière. Incarcérer autrement, incarcérer pour inclure en condamnant non à une durée mais à une mise en action, participerait donc à régénérer la manière dont nous envisageons ce qui nous unit.

Political Action Beyond Resistance: Arendt and "Revolutionary Spirit" in Egypt

The article examines what it calls the "politics-as-resistance" frame in contemporary political theory, originating in the works of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. This way of organizing political experience is contrasted with Hannah Arendt's political thought, particularly her writings on revolutionary action. Arendt's often overlooked – and partly unpublished – passages on virtù and fortuna are further suggested as important additions to her thinking on action. I argue that Arendt's "world-centric" approach can illuminate certain aspects of political experience that remain dimmed in the more subject-oriented politics-as-resistance frame.
