Abstract Background Maspin, a member of the serpin family, is a suppressor of tumor growth, an inhibitor of angiogenesis and an inducer of apoptosis. Maspin induces apoptosis by increasing Bax, a member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis-regulating proteins. In this exploratory study, we investigated the associated expression of Maspin and Bax proteins as a potential prognostic factor in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCCA). Localized hypothermia: impact on oxygenation, microregional perfusion, metabolic and bioenergetic status of subcutaneous rat tumours.

The effect of localized hypothermia on microcirculatory and metabolic parameters in s.c. DS sarcomas on the hind foot dorsum of Sprague-Dawley rats was investigated. Tumours were cooled by superfusion of the tumour surface with cooled saline solution to 25 degrees C or 15 degrees C. Control tumours remained at 35 degrees C. These temperatures were maintained for 30 min. In tumour oxygenation measurements, hypothermia at 25 degrees C and 15 degrees C caused progressive decreases in the size of the fraction of pO2 measurements between 0 and 2.5 mmHg together with a reduction in pO2 variability. Ang II can be generated intravascularly by the renin-angiotensin system or extravascularly by mast cell chymase. There is general agreement today that intracellular diffusive transport of HbO2 and O2 limits the rate of oxygen uptake or release by the blood in the exchange vessels. Recent hemorheological results have shown that the mammalian erythrocyte exhibits fluidity as its most unique rheological property: it can be deformed continuously and rapidly, shear and normal stresses can be transmitted to the interior of the cell where systems of laminar flow are induced. Investigation of the vascular and pleiotropic effects of atorvastatin and pioglitazone in a population at high cardiovascular risk.

We investigated the effect of atorvastatin monotherapy and combined treatment with atorvastatin and pioglitazone on intima-media thickness, vascular function and the cardiovascular risk profile. Early albumin infusion improves global and local hemodynamics and reduces inflammatory response in hemorrhagic shock.

Objective To evaluate the effects of an early, short-term albumin infusion on mesenteric microcirculation and global hemodynamics in hemorrhagic shock. Design A prospective, randomized study. Setting Animal laboratory at a university medical clinic. Subjects Seventeen Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 250–400 g. Interventions The rats underwent median laparotomy and exteriorization of an ileal loop for intravital microscopy of the mesenteric microcirculation. Bimodal Oscillation Frequencies of Blood Flow in the Inflammatory Colon Microcirculation

Rhythmic changes in blood flow direction have been described in the mucosal plexus of mice with acute colitis. In this report, we studied mice with acute colitis induced either by dextran sodium sulfate or by trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid. Both forms of colitis were associated with blood flow oscillations as documented by fluorescence intravital videomicroscopy. The complex oscillation patterns suggested more than one mechanism for these changes in blood flow. By tracking fluorescent nanoparticles in the inflamed mucosal plexus, we identified two forms of blood flow oscillations within the inflammatory mouse colon. Changes in microregional perfusion, oxygenation, ATP and lactate distribution in subcutaneous rat tumours upon water-filtered IR-A hyperthermia

The effect of hyperthermia on microcirculatory and metabolic parameters in s.c. DS-sarcomas of different sizes on the hind foot dorsum of SD-rats was investigated. Hyperthermia was carried out using a novel water-filtered, infrared-A radiation technique. Heating was performed at a rate of 0.5 degrees C/min until 44 degrees C was achieved in the tumour centre, which was maintained for 60 min. Background In patients with septic shock, the skin is often chosen for the evaluation of peripheral perfusion and oxygenation. Changes in skin microcirculatory vessel oxygen saturation and relative hemoglobin concentration can be described using a mottling score or captured with hyperspectral imaging. However, the effectiveness of the mottling score in assessing microcirculation remains to be shown.
