Low temperature catalytic combustion of propane over Pt-based catalyst with inverse opal microstructure in microchannel reactor

2007

A novel Pt-based catalyst with highly regular, periodic inverse opal microstructure was fabricated in a microchannel reactor, and catalytic testing revealed excellent conversion and stable activity for propane combustion at low temperatures.

Kinetic study of ionic liquid synthesis in a microchannel reactor

2010

Abstract A microchannel reaction system, mainly consisting of a micromixer and a tubular reactor, was used to investigate the kinetics of butylation of 1-methyl-imidazole [MIM] for the synthesis of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMIM]Br). The low variance (σθ2 = 0.019) of the residence time distribution, measured by a step stimuli–response tracer method, implies that this reaction system could be regarded as a plug flow reactor. As a fast and reliable method, the titration of bromide was established to determine the yield of [BMIM]Br. The reaction kinetics was studied by varying the molar ratio of 1-bromobutane [BrBu] to [MIM] (1.04–1.49) and temperature (75–90 °C). …

Microfluidic Synthesis of Actuating Microparticles from a Thiol-Ene Based Main-Chain Liquid Crystalline Elastomer.

2016

In this article the microfluidic synthesis of strongly actuating particles on the basis of a liquid crystalline main-chain elastomer is presented. The synthesis is carried out in a capillary-based co-flow microreactor by photo-initiated thiol-ene click chemistry of a liquid crystalline monomer mixture. These microparticles exhibit a deformation from a spherical to a rod-like shape during the thermal-initiated phase transition of the liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) at which the particles’ aspect ratio is almost doubled. Repeated contraction cycles confirm the complete reversibility of the particles’ actuation properties. The transition temperature of the LCE, the temperature range of the …

Electro-generation of H2O2 and abatement of organic pollutant in water by an electro-Fenton process in a microfluidic reactor

2013

The electro-generation of H2O2 and the abatement of the model organic pollutant Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in water by an electro-Fenton process were performed both in a conventional undivided macro cell and, for the first time, in a microfluidic reactor. Under optimized operative conditions, the reduction of oxygen in the microdevice gave rise, using graphite cathode, to a concentration of H2O2 of about 6 mM, one order of magnitude higher than that achieved in conventional cells. Similarly, when electro-Fenton was performed in the microfluidic reactor a dramatic increase of the abatement of COD was achieved with respect to that obtained in a conventional cell. Keywords: Wastewater treatments, Mic…

Natural or synthetic nucleic acids encapsulated in a closed cavity of amphiphiles

2013

In this review some aspects of the interactions of organized structures of amphiphiles with natural or synthetic DNAs are briefly considered. In particular DNAs encapsulated in closed cavities of amphiphiles, specifically giant vesicles and water-in-oil droplets and reverse micelles, are dealt with. Two main applications of giant vesicles are reviewed in detail, namely their use as microreactors where reactions can be followed by optical microscopy on a single vesicle and in synthetic biology as protocell models or as potential semi-synthetic ‘‘living’’ cells. Water-in-oil droplets uses for rapid and relatively low-cost DNA amplification by PCR reaction are described as well as for in vitro…

Preferential CO oxidation over catalysts with well-defined inverse opal structure in microchannels

2008

Catalyst supports of CeO 2 /SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 with three-dimensionally ordered macroporous structure were fabricated in microchannels by application of PMMA opals as templates. Pt-Rh supported on CeO 2 /SiO 2 showed high efficiency for CO removal in preferential CO oxidation in the presence of excess hydrogen. Pt-Rh supported on Al 2 O 3 with an inverse opal structure showed higher reactivity than that supported on wash-coated Al 2 O 3 layers in microchannel reactor.

Electrochemical Processes and Apparatuses for the Abatement of Acid Orange 7 in Water

2014

We have studied the electrochemical treatment of aqu eous solutions contaminated by Acid Orange 7 (AO7) by electro-Fenton process (EF). The main object ive was to evaluate how the electrochemical route affects the performances of the d egradation process. EF process was carried out in a number of very different reactors: conventional bench scale electrochem ical cell, microfluidic electrochemical reactor, microbial fuel cell and stack for reverse electrodialysis processes. The utilisation of micro devices allowed to work without the addition of a supporting elec trolyte and improved the performances of EF. Microbial fuel cell did not need the supply of electric energy bu t our device requir…
