Study of microcirculation in oral lichen planus by video-capillaroscopy.

2007

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate “in vivo” the oral microcirculatory characteristics in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and to discover any differences in microcirculation in comparison with healthy patients. Study design Twenty patients with established diagnosis of OLP and 20 healthy patients were examined in our laboratory by means of contact optical probe videocapillaroscopy. The examined areas for each patient were the right and the left buccal mucosae. Capillary density and total capillary diameter, as well as afferent and efferent loop diameter were studied; the discovery of characteristic (tortuous, branched) loops was also investigated. Results The results wer…

The effect of cigar smoking on the lingual microcirculation

2005

The aim of this study was to analyze the lingual microcirculation in vivo and to evaluate the effects on it of cigar smoking, using computerized videocapillaroscopy. Twenty-five healthy nonsmokers and 25 healthy smokers were examined. For each subject we evaluated the visibility, course, tortuosity, and any images characteristic of capillary loops, as well as the possible presence of microhemorrhages, the average caliber of the capillary loops, and the number of capillary loops visible per square millimeter. The investigation of the lingual mucosa revealed capillary loops with a course parallel to the surface. In smokers, capillary loops had a smaller caliber (P < 0.001) and there was a hig…

Hepatitis A-like non-A, non-B hepatitis: light and electron microscopic observations of three cases.

1986

To date, three types of NANBH have been distinguished by epidemiological, clinical and experimental data. We examined the liver biopsies of three patients with an acute NANBH resembling hepatitis A from the infection route, incubation period and clinical course. The liver biopsies revealed lesions with a portal and periportal predominance, thus also exhibiting parallels with hepatitis A on the histopathological level.

Morphological characteristics of microcirculation in oral lichen planus involving the lateral border of the tongue.

2009

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucosal condition commonly encountered in dental practice. Lichen planus is believed to represent an abnormal immune response in which epithelial cells are recognized as foreign, secondary to changes in the antigenicity of the cell surface. It has various oral manifestations. The aim of the study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics of microcirculation of lingual lichen planus (LLP). Twenty patients (10 patients with LLP and 10 healthy patients) were examined by means of videocapillaroscopy. The left margin of the lingual mucosa was examined in each patient. The capillary loop length, loop diameter, and capillary density were analyzed on ev…

PERIODONTAL MICROCIRCULATORY ABNORMALITIES IN PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC SCLEROSIS

2005

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to observe the differences in periodontal microcirculation between healthy patients and patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). METHODS: Fifteen healthy patients and 15 patients with SSc were examined. Periodontal capillaroscopy was used to investigate the characteristics of microcirculation. The visibility, course, tortuosity, possible presence of microhemorrhages, average caliber of the capillary loops, and number of visible capillary loops per square millimeter were evaluated for each patient. RESULTS: The investigation was simple, non-invasive, and repeatable for each patient. In patients with SSc, it was possible to observe a reduced number of capi…

Periodontal microcirculation in diabetics: An in vivo non-invasive analysis by means of videocapillaroscopy

2012

Summary Background Diabetes mellitus is today considered a society-wide disease of a chronic/degenerative nature. Among the secondary effects of diabetes, the one that interests the dental surgeon most is diabetic parodontopathy. The aim of this study was to underline and objectify microcirculatory variations at a periodontal mucous level in type 2 diabetics. Material/Methods The study enrolled 80 subjects: 40 subjects with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type II (18 males and 22 females, between 44 and 85 years of age); and 40 healthy subjects (17 males and 23 females, between 44 and 78 years of age). All the subjects, both diabetic and healthy, were submitted to a videocapillaroscopic ex…

Periodontal disease and sjogren syndrome: a possible correlation?

2009

Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by a progressive lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, especially salivary and lachrymal ones, leading to xerostomia, parotid gland enlargement, and xerophthalmia. The aim of this study is to describe the capillaroscopic pattern of the interdental papilla in patients with SS and to evaluate a possible correlation with periodontal disease. Methods: A total of 25 patients affected by SS and 25 healthy controls were examined. The patients with conditions that compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or some pharmacological treatments, were not included in the study. All the…

Diabetic Microagiopathy of Oral Mucosa Depends on Disease Duration and Therapy

2017

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic degenerative systemic disease whose prevalence is increasing. This paper aims to evaluate the effects of diabetic microangiopathy, depending on its duration and the type of treatment administered, by using polarized light videocapillaroscopy of the oral mucosa. Material/Methods: We enrolled 120 subjects: 60 healthy subjects and 60 patients with diabetes mellitus. In turn, patients were divided into 3 subgroups according to the type of diabetes, the duration of the disease, and the type of treatment administered. A videocapillaroscopic examination of the oral mucosa was carried out on the diabetic and healthy subjects. Results: Changes in microcircu…

Treatment and its side effects in ANCA-associated vasculitides - Study based on POLVAS registry data.

2020

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study is to present the treatment modalities and associated side effects in a Polish nation-wide ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) patients’ cohort. Materials and methods Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with AAV between 1990 and 2016, included in the POLVAS registry was performed. Standard descriptive statistic methods were used with an emphasis on the treatment modalities. Results There were 625 patients diagnosed with AAV included in this study: 417 cases of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; 66.7%), 106 cases of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA; 17.0%) and 102 cases of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA; 16.3%). The mean ag…
