The First Contact between the West and China: Sinology´s Origin
2019
In this study the first contact between Western and Asia culture, specifically with China, is reviewed. It begins with a reference to the Roman Empire mentioning the most relevant reference works for a more in-depth study. Next, it focuses on the diaspora of Nestorian Christianity towards the East and specifically its location in Chinese territory, considering also the main reference works and following a historical and lineal story. Then, the trips of Benjamín de Tudela, although they did not go beyond Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf, served to verify the existence of Jewish communities in the Far East. In that frame of reference, the context of the Silk Road would explain its dedication …

2017
In 1385 Ferrer Saiol, protonotary of Queen Eleanor of Sicily, translated into Catalan Palladius’s Opus Agriculturae (‘The Work on Farming’). This Latin work was widely known throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, and therefore a translation of Opus Agriculturae was wanted in the fourteenth-century's Kingdom of Aragon. A difficult aspect of Opus Agriculturae is its technical vocabulary. Being aware of it, Ferrer Saiol referred in his translation to his use of numerous reference books to undertake the best possible version. These medieval glossaries and vocabularies belong in his translation, explicitly as well as implicitly. We identify here books that Ferrer Saiol used for this version, …
Apocryphal Passions of the Apostles in Croatian Glagolitic Texts
2020
In the course of the Middle Ages, apocryphal and hagiographic texts of The Acts of the Apostles of various origins became part of the Croatian Glagolitic literature. The Passion of Saint Andrew, for example, is documented in the sanctorale of nineteen Croatian Glagolitic breviaries dating from the period between the 14th and mid-16th centuries. The Glagolitic Passion is an abbreviated translation of the Latin Epistula presbyterorum et diaconorum Achaiae (BHL 428) from the 6th century. The texts of the Passion of Jamesthe Apostle (Jacobus Maior, apost., filius Zebedaei, frater Johannis, Passio, BHL 4057) are found in two Glagolitic breviaries, namely the Breviary of Vitus of Omi?alj (1396) a…

The thistle-mistle formula in the Viking Age and Nordic Middle Ages – Form, function, and symbolic value
2021
The paper aims to shed new light on the thistle-mistle formula in the famous Bósa saga and in a series of younger runic inscriptions, including some hitherto unpublished runic scribbles on a churchwall in Denmark. The author explores different graphological representations and disgui¬sed variants of this runic formula to get to grips with its positive and/or negative content. Thus, the thistle-mistle formula in the Nordic Viking Age and Middle Ages is identified as a clear-cut case of the written, visual formula which may be deliberately disguised for magical reasons. Based on Harris (1975) and Mitchell (1998), the author argues that this is a prototypical fertility formula which can be cha…
