The lived experience of rescuing people who have driven into floodwater: Understanding challenges and identifying areas for providing support.

2018

Background: Drowning is a major public health issue, with risk increasing during times of flood. Driving into floodwater is a major risk factor for flood-related drowning and injury, and despite widespread public health campaigns, many people continue to undertake this risky behaviour and require rescue. Purpose: We aimed to identify key challenges faced by emergency services personnel when rescuing those who have driven into floodwater, and to identify strategies for supporting rescuers in this important role. Methods: Australian flood rescue operators (N = 8) who had previously rescued a driver who had driven into floodwater participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed u…

Middle School Students’ Perceptions Towards Linguistic Diversity in the Classroom

2014

In 2010, a heated political controversy centered on the Arizona Department of Education's desire to prohibit "heavily accented or ungrammatical teachers” from teaching English Language Learners (Blum & Johnson 2012; Jordan 2010). However, although an administrative practice such as this would greatly affect students’, their attitudes towards linguistic diversity in the classroom have been largely neglected. By surveying 94 middle school students in a public school district in the southwestern United States, this study sought to understand students’ attitudes regarding teachers’ and classmates’ accents and the factors that may influence them, such as their language background and the presenc…

Validation of chasmophytic syntaxa of colline and montane zones in Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2016

AbstractEight syntaxa are validated with the previous names regarded as invalidly published according to the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature. The validation concerns syntaxa of rock plant communities of the Campanuletalia incanescentis order reported from the Pamir Alai mountains in Tajikistan. The majority of validated syntaxa represents association level, one is an alliance. All validations are conducted due to the invalidity of tables with typus releves according to art. 1 of the Code: they were not distributed as printed matter. The validated syntaxa are as follows: Caricion koshewnikowii, Scutellarietum hissaricae, Scutellarietum schugnanicae, Scutellarietum zaprja…

New syntaxa of tall-forb vegetation in the Pamir-Alai and western Tian Shan Mts. (Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Middle Asia) – an addendum to Nowak et a…

2021

We validate eleven syntaxa (eight associations and three alliances) of tall-forb vegetation that were published earlier as nomina provisoria according to the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature. The validation concerns syntaxa of tall-forb vegetation of the class Prangetea ulopterae Klein 1987 reported from Pamir-Alai and western Tian Shan Mountains (Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan). Taxonomic reference: Cherepanov (1995). Abbreviations: ICPN = International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature.

Plasma PAF-acetylhydrolase in patients with coronary artery disease: results of a cross-sectional analysis.

2003

Inflammation underlies both onset and perpetuation of atherosclerosis. Plasma lipoproteins transport the platelet-activating factor-acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) with potentially anti-inflammatory activities. Our aim was to determine whether PAF-AH activity was associated with inflammatory markers and with coronary artery disease (CAD). PAF-AH activity and a panel of inflammatory mediators were measured in plasma of 496 patients with CAD and in 477 controls; 276 patients presented with stable angina pectoris and 220 with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Individuals within the highest quartile of PAF-AH activity had an 1.8-fold increase in CAD risk [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01 to 3.2; P = 0.…

Transport of Antarctic stratospheric strongly dehydrated air into the troposphere observed during the HALO-ESMVal campaign 2012

2015

Abstract. Dehydration in the Antarctic winter stratosphere is a well-known phenomenon that is annually observed by satellites and occasionally observed by balloon-borne measurements. However, in situ measurements of dehydrated air masses in the Antarctic vortex are very rare. Here, we present detailed observations with the in situ and GLORIA remote sensing instrument payload aboard the German aircraft HALO. Strongly dehydrated air masses down to 1.6 ppmv of water vapor were observed as far north as 47° S in an altitude between 12 and 13 km in the lowermost stratosphere. The dehydration can be traced back to individual ice formation events above the Antarctic Peninsula and Plateau, where ice…

Le pont des Grilles de la Basse-Seille (fin XIVe siècle), ancienne porte d’eau de l’enceinte urbaine de Metz

2017

The bridge des Grilles de la Basse-Seille is one of the last vestiges of the medieval fortification in Metz. It is one of rare examples of fortified bridge in France. Built in the end of the 14th century, it is backfilled in 1911 and only its upper section is visible. An archaeological and historic study was made in 2011 to understand the configuration and the functioning of the bridge in the Middle Ages.

Tell el-'Abd II. Pottery and Potmarks at an Early Urban Settlement of the Middle Euphrates River Valley, Syria. Final Reports of the Syrian-German ex…

2013

The monograph investigates the breakdown of the Uruk world-system towards the end of the 4th millennium BCE, and the roots of secondary state formation in the Middle Euphrates region through the analysis of continuity and change in the Early Bronze ceramic material from the site of Tell el-‘Abd (Tabqa Dam, Syria). This analysis fills a chronological gap for the early third millennium, a period poorly known in the district downstream from Carchemish. It further includes the study of over 1300 potter’s marks, thus offering new insight into the intra- and inter-site organization of pottery production and into a complex and variegated system of visual communication active at a regional level be…
