„Stowarzyszenie Wychodźców Polskich pod opieką Królowej Korony Polskiej w diecezji częstochowskiej” w parafiach powiatu wieluńskiego
2020
The influence of social support on the wellbeing of immigrants residing in Italy: Sources and functions as predictive factors for life satisfaction l…
2023
Moving from one country to another involves not only separation from the country of origin, but also the tiring process of integration into a new physical, institutional, and sociocultural context, which may expose migrants to acculturation stress. The loss of former support networks, or at the very least their transformation, presents immigrants with the need to rebuild their social support systems in the host country, involving an active search for support. Therefore, the aim of study is to analyze the structure of informal social support and its capacity to predict immigrants’ sense of community, resilience, and satisfaction with life. The results confirm that social support predicts sat…
Healthcare access of immigrants: An integrated ecological framework
2019
Access to healthcare impacts in health, and for its importance it has been conceptualized by different theoretical models. Theories tackling social barriers have been established too. Nevertheless, a lack of theorization about healthcare access of immigrants exists, and there is no theory able to integrate all the scientific literature on this and its impact on the health of immigrants. In order to study the factors relating to the access of immigrants and to guide the development and evaluation of public health interventions, an integrative approach is needed. In this regard, from an ecological perspective healthcare access of immigrants would be shaped by interrelated factors in different…
In the Name of Antigone: Migrants and Human Rights in Contemporary Urban Spaces
2022
Starting from the metaphor of the ethical conflict between dignity and rights in Antigone, the article reflects on the theme of human dignity for a critique of global inequalities. These theoretical assumptions are the basis for reflecting on the theme of contemporary international mobility of populations, which generates significant effects on the production of borders and the right to the city, highlighting new issues of social and spatial justice. In particular, with respect to the “newcomers”, claiming the “right to the city”, after claiming the “right to mobility”, very often coincides with the claim and protection of human rights, in order to build “spaces for survival”. On the one ha…
Multicultural Palermo between gentrification and real estate market crisis in the historical centre

Multiculturalism is a characteristic of the post industrial city which will challenge planning through new paradigms, in fact the increasing of transnational flow of migrants reshapes the physical urban space and the socio-cultural relations, expressing new housing needs often neglected by planning and public policies. The demographic dynamic, …
The COVID-19 Crisis, Human Rights and Unfair Models of Production: The Case of Migrant Workers in the Agri-food Sector in European Countries
2022
Since its outbreak, the COVID-19 crisis has sharply exacerbated the structural inequalities that characterize the socioeconomic systems of European Union (EU) countries, disproportionately impacting people most affected by discrimination and social exclusion. The Covid-19 crisis has also brought under the spotlight the significant role of migrant workers in core sectors – such as the agri-food sector – disclosing how they are fundamental in the economic and societal functioning of EU countries. At the same time, the pandemic has sharply disclosed the limits of long supply chains (in terms of price distortion, unfair competition and distribution dynamics), as well as the conditions of exploi…

Vulnerability to Forced Labour and Trafficking: The case of Romanian women in the agricultural sector in Sicily
2015
This paper focuses on labour and sexual exploitation faced by Romanian female workers employed in the agricultural sector in Ragusa, Sicily, Italy. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in 2013 and 2014 with Romanian female farm workers in Ragusa, the paper identifies factors that contribute towards their vulnerability to exploitation. By paying specific attention to the experiences of women who are mothers with dependent children, we look at structural factors that increase their vulnerability and consider how this vulnerability ‘forces’ women into situations whereby they effectively accept and/or submit to abuse. We also highlight how European Union (EU) citizenship does not automatically protec…
