La Sicilia negli Orsi di Dino Buzzati e Lorenzo Mattotti
2022

2011
This paper considers the phenomenon of migration, by proposing a case study upon the migration of Romanians in Italy. As a consequence of the access of Romania in the UE in January 2007, Romanians became citizens of UE, but, nevertheless, they are not aware of their rights and juridical statute and continue to live in a state of subordination and humility in their interaction with their employers. They do not rebel, since they are afraid of losing their working place. This is a step backwards as to the process of integration, which, as Buttitta noticed, should not lead to a "standardization of the immigrants to the culture of the host country, but to an acceptance of immigrants, as part of …
E l'Europa disumanizzò se stessa. Una performance
2019
It is a dialogue that interweaves the current events of migration with Toni Morrison's book: Beloved. The novel tells of a house and its inhabitants in an America where a river traces the division between freedom and slavery. Between Europe and Africa, that border zone is the Mediterranean: a sea of transit and fishing, a liquid border and an open wound. Another aspect of Beloved reflects on what the words freedom and responsibility mean. From Morrison's women to those of today, the questions here have the same gravity. Reading Toni Morrison today means once again asking what Europe is; a Europe that then with slavery, now with migration laws has had to and must dehumanise not only slaves/m…
South-eastern Sicily: a counterfactual post-metropolis
2017
Postmetropolis is an ambitious term that could be summarized as the "postmodern metropolis." With it Edward W. Soja (2000) aims to define the globalized city that he supposes to be involved in a radical transition process that began with the post-modern city. In relation to these considerations, the article explores the post-metropolitan profile of South-eastern Sicily through: a socio-economic outlook describing the characteristics of demography, employment and income in this part of Sicily; a spatial analysis of housing and land use; and finally an institutional description of the administrative state of the art in Syracuse, Ragusa and their surroundings. Each section describes the most c…
Two solitudes: Singalesi e Tamil tra Catania e Palermo
2012
Immigrants from Sri Lanka in Sicily are the prevailing representatives of the Indian Subcontinent. Their migration took place with the beginning of the ethnic conflict which started in 1983. The two communities, Sinhalese and Tamils, decided to settle respectively in Catania and Palermo proposing the same distrust of the conflict. So the “two solitudes” of the two major Sicilian cities are also the mirror of the lack of communication of the two ethnic groups of Sri Lanka.
Intercultural Relations in Italy
2017
In culturally diverse societies, one of the biggest questions on our minds is 'how shall we all live together?' The chapter offers an answer to this fundamental and topical issue. By exploring intercultural relationships between dominant/national and non-dominant/ethnic populations in Italy, the authors analyse 'general' principles of intercultural relations and guidelines for social inclusion.
