2021

The contribution aims to frame the diasporic phenomenon of the 15th-16th centuries of the Balkan populations from areas roughly corresponding today to Albania and Greece, reading it according to a plurality of levels and intertwining that characterize the Mediterranean modern age history. Specifically, the paper summarizes the most recent reflections on the subject and focuses on the reasons that triggered the migration flows and on the historiographical narration over the centuries.

Liberalizing Immigration Policies for the UK Agricultural Sector in the Post-Brexit Era

2022

We investigate the effects of immigration policies on the UK agricultural sector under the new post-Brexit deal through a computable general equilibrium framework. We consider bilateral flows of migrants and frictions as part of capital and labor mobility to compare the point-based immigration system to open immigration policies in terms of their impacts on agriculture. We also integrate the GTAP-GMig2 immigration model with the GTAP-AGR agriculture model. Our findings show that liberal immigration policies have positive effects on production, farmers’ income, and overall welfare. The benefits increase if these policies are combined with reduced bureaucracy and lower behind-the-border costs…

Postgraduate education and job mismatch in Italy: Does migration help?

2023

Doctoral graduates represent the pinnacle of education. While the importance of increasing their number has been recognised by the Italian government and there has been a huge increase in the number of publicly funded PhD scholarships, doctoral graduates still struggle in the labour market to find employment commensurate with their skills and competencies. It is against this backdrop that the role of migration becomes crucial. Exploiting Italian microdata at the census level, this study aims to investigate how human capital migration, occurring at different ‘times’ of individual's life and across different regions, could mitigate the potential education–job mismatch, which is measured here …

The routes of Southern Italy university students: an explorative analysis

2022

The neoclassical migration approach postulates that different conditions in labour markets among territories are the driving forces behind migration. On the other hand, exponents of the new economics of migration argue that the decision to move is not made at the individual level. Considering migration as the result of a decision taken within a social network helps to explain the so-called chain migration. In this paper, we pay attention to the migratory chain of university students. This work introduces a statistical technique to “classify” migratory chains of students living in Sicily, Sardinia or Apulia, and enrolled in some centre-north regions from 2008 to 2017.

Student mobility: A systemic approach to preferential patterns in higher education

2022

The thesis is a collection of three essays with a “fil rouge”, namely the study of Italian student mobility, 2008 to 2017, analyzed systemically. The main objective of the thesis is to develop statistical methods suitable to identifying preferential mobility patterns starting from the micro-data of a mobility network and applying these methods to reveal preferential patterns of mobility among Italian students with a particular focus on students from Sicily. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that chain migration, within the framework of a network analysis, has been applied to the study of Italian student mobility. In each of the three chapters, there are data analysis tool…

Child Welfare Systems and Migrant Children. A Cross Country Study of Policies and Practices / Sistemas de Bienestar Infantil y menores inmigrantes. U…

2015

With the increase of migration, the share of the population that needs some form of assistance has increased. Almost everywhere, the number of children who need protection (within the family, away from the family, and even those without family) has increased. The trouble is that often the systems designed to protect children do not intercept migrant children, not even those who are unaccompanied and without documents, who instead come under the jurisdiction of the agencies that deal with immigration. The migratory phenomena put a strain on the welfare systems, mainly because the principles of protection and assistance present in the Welfare system, which are inspired by human rights and soc…
