2018
In a previous work related to the use of digital media among migrants, we highlighted the importance of the specific effect that use of digital and social media determines in the construction of the "story" of the migratory experience, both for those who are the actors and for the listener, welcoming, once again, Marshall McLuhan's assumption that "the medium is the message" ... In fact the use of this medium, among others, can be considered, in itself, a choice that directs each of the different phases of the migratory process, that is: the one in which migrants design, the one in which migrants realize, the one in which migrants tell. And finally, the one in which relationships between mi…

2019
This article is a case study of the process of mobilization to violence on the internet. The goal of this paper was to identify a select number of factors within the narrative on the topic of modern immigration that can be found on the internet and analyze them using the theoretical constructs that can be found in the literature on this subject. The scientists that study genocide have identified several factors commonly found in historically documented events that must be present in order for genocide to occur. In this paper the author will refer to works of scientists such as Helen Fein, Manus I. Midlarsky, Lech M. Nijakowski. The author of the paper analyzed the content published on the i…

A Universal Health Care System? Unmet Need for Medical Care Among Regular and Irregular Immigrants in Italy
2017
Italy has a universal health care system that covers, in principle, the whole resident population, irrespective of citizenship and legal status. This study calculates the prevalence of unmet need for medical care among Italian citizens, regular and irregular immigrants and estimates logistic regression models to assess whether differences by citizenship and legal status hold true once adjusting for potential confounders. The analysis is based on two Surveys on Income and Living Conditions of Italian households and households with foreigners. Controlling for various factors, the odds of experiencing unmet need for medical care are 27% higher for regular immigrants than for Italian citizens a…
Country images and identities in times of populism: Swiss media discourses on the ‘stop mass immigration’ initiative
2020
The construction of certain country images and identities is traditionally studied in relation to public diplomacy, strategic communication and nation branding practices of state and non-state actors. However, we notice the increased instrumentalization of country images and identities in debates on issues beyond strategic promotional practices, such as those articulated around elections, referendums or migration. We analyse how Swiss media constructed Switzerland's image and identity in the debate following the 2014 referendum on ‘stop mass immigration’ initiative, in times of populism, a communication phenomenon and ideology discursively articulated by political and media actors. Thus, w…
The redefinition of gender roles in immigrant women: the importance of local spaces in global processes
2017
ABSTRACTIn today’s complex, intercultural, transnational, glocalized world, linking conceptual analyses and theoretical representations to the empirical study of female migration also requires, among other aspects, acknowledging the importance of the arrival context in the redefinition of gender roles, since it operates as an area of opportunity or containment mainly due to a number of specific features, which interacts with women’s economic, cultural and social capital, to produce different results in the situation of migrant women. The context of arrival and the subjects, conceived of as actors inserted in social structures where they have scope for action, is the focus of our analysis. T…

The ‘Why, What and How’ of Inclusion from the Practitioner's Point of View: Inclusion of Immigrant Children in the Norwegian Educational System
2011
The aim of the article is to explore teachers' perceptions of the concept of multicultural inclusion. The study adopts a qualitative approach where 14 individual semi-structured interviews have been used to assess and analyse teachers' reflections when considering the ‘why, what and how’ questions surrounding inclusion. The overall findings indicate that teachers view multicultural inclusion as a desirable and positive process which should be practised in contemporary schools. However, the findings also indicate that teachers use rather common and imprecise terms and generally hold that this process is straightforward and unproblematic in terms of its definition. This is further supported …
