Determinants of educational advancement of rural areas in Poland
2017
MIGRATION OF THE HIGHLY EDUCATED: EVIDENCE FROM RESIDENCE SPELLS OF UNIVERSITY GRADUATES*
2011
We examine the inter-regional migration of university graduates from 1991 to 2003 in Finland. The results show that time matters: two-years before and during the graduation year the hazard rates of migration increase, and then decrease thereafter. Although university graduates are particularly mobile, we find that most of them do not move from their region of studies within 10 years after graduation. The out-migration, i.e., brain drain, is much higher among graduates in the more peripheral universities than in the growth centers (Helsinki in particular). Migration is also substantially more likely for those studying away from the home region than for those studying at home. peerReviewed
Regional concentration of university graduates : The role of high school grades and parental background
2020
In this paper, we analyse long-term changes in the regional distribution and migration flows of university graduates in Finland and Sweden. This study is based on detailed longitudinal population register data, including information on high school grades and parental background. We find a distinct pattern of skill divergence across regions in both countries over the last 3 decades. The uneven distribution of human capital has been reinforced by the mobility patterns of university graduates, for whom regional sorting by high school grades and parental background is evident. Our findings indicate that traditional measures of human capital concentration most likely underscore actual regional …
Kielellisiä taitoja ja koulunkäyntivalmiuksia : valmistavan opetuksen ja oman äidinkielen opetuksen tila ja vaikuttavuus -arviointi
2022
Tässä raportissa tarkastellaan Kansallisen koulutuksen arviointikeskuksen (Karvin) toteuttaman kansallisen arvioinnin tuloksia perusopetukseen valmistavan opetuksen ja oppilaan oman äidinkielen opetuksen tilasta ja vaikuttavuudesta. Arviointi kohdistuu erityisesti opetuksen tavoitteiden toteutumiseen ja opetuksen järjestämistapoihin. Lisäksi selvitetään opetusta ja oppimista edistäviä ja estäviä tekijöitä. Arviointi tuottaa tietoa hallituksen Oikeus oppia -kehittämisohjelmaan. Ohjelman tavoitteena on laatia toimenpiteitä, joilla turvataan maahanmuuttotaustaisten lasten ja nuorten oppimisedellytykset ja koulutussiirtymät etenkin koulutuksen nivelvaiheissa. Arviointiin osallistui 73 opetuksen…
“LATVIA WILL ALWAYS BE MY HOME”: LATVIAN EMIGRANTS IN SWEDEN AFTER 1991 IN THE LATVIAN NATIONAL ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION
2020
Latvians are one of the most mobile European nations. Latvian migration to Sweden has a long history. After the II World War, more than 4,000 people moved from Latvia to Sweden, fleeing Soviet power. The second wave of immigration to Sweden began with the restoration of Latvian independence in 1991 and continues to this day. Both of these waves of migration are documented in the Latvian National Oral History collection. This article analyzes life-story interviews with expatriates in Sweden after the restoration of independence and explores how the migrants themselves describe their experiences in their new home country, their reflections on Latvians, Latvianness, and the preservation of nat…
A fuzzy approach to multidimensional material deprivation measurement: the case of foreigners living in Italy
2014
This paper provides a new approach to the measurement of multidimensional material deprivation, based on partial order theory and on fuzzy set measurement. The main feature of the methodology is that the information needed for the deprivation assessment is extracted directly from the relational structure of the dataset, avoiding any kind of scaling and not proper aggregation procedure, so as to respect the measurement level of the data. An empirical illustration, using data from a special EU-SILC survey on migrants in Italy, provides a new insight on the material deprivation of foreigners living in Italy
SICILY: THE OVERWHELMING FLUXES OF MASS TOURISM, IMMIGRATION AND STREET MARKETS
2016
A distribution curves comparison approach to analyze the university moving students performance
2018
Maternally‐transferred thyroid hormones and life‐history variation in birds
2022
1. In vertebrates, thyroid hormones (THs) play an important role in the regulation of growth, development, metabolism, photoperiodic responses and migration. Maternally transferred THs are important for normal early-phase embryonic development when embryos are not able to produce endogenous THs. Previous studies have shown that variation in maternal THs within the physiological range can influence offspring phenotype. 2. Given the essential functions of maternal THs in development and metabolism, THs may be a mediator of life-history variation across species. 3. We tested the hypothesis that differences in life histories are associated with differences in maternal TH transfer across species…
