A method of data structuring for the study of diffusion processes of raw materials and manufactured objects
2017
International audience; Workgroup 3 of the ArchaeDyn II programme aims at studying the diffusion systems of products in ancient times. In order to be able to structure data in GIS in an appropriate way, we propose to go through three levels of modelling: the first one aims at gathering together the different components of the diffusion systems taking into account their interactions; the second corresponds to a conceptual data model created with the help of the HBDS method, that will, as we get to the third stage, lead to the creation of a "three-dimensional" geodatabase. Here we point out the fact that the approach through the simple notion of “site” is not sufficient to study the products’…

Les Grandes Plaines des Etats-Unis : une Amérique du déclin démographique
2003
The Shinking of Population in the Great Plains of the United States. In the Plain States (Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota), where many of the American counties experiencing losses in population are concentrated, the variety of population dynamics is wider than expected. Besides persistent decline linked to rural outmigration and ageing in remote locations, the is also a rapid growth of the principal metropolitan areas of the region. In several counties, the reversal of demographic fortunes is linked to the recent creation of large meatpacking plants, which have recruited Mexican labor. The sudden arrival of Hispanics in small rural towns has generated tensions. The magnitude…
Effect of carbon source supply and its location on competition between inoculated and established bacterial strains in sterile soil microcosm
1999
The aim of this work was to study how the location of a carbon source and of bacterial cells in soil can enhance the growth of a bacterial inoculum. Studies were performed using irradiated soil and two pairs of strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Pseudomonas fluorescens. For each species, an antibiotic-resistant mutant was used as inoculant and introduced into a sterile soil pre-colonised with its parent strain. The inocula and a glycerol amendment were introduced together or separately into soil using porous microgranules or by spraying a suspension onto the bulk soil. Competition was assessed by plate counts of both inoculant and established populations. Both B. japonicum and P. fluor…

A Study into the Integration of ICT into a Business Management Course: Challenges and Achievements
2012
Nowadays, the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) play an increasingly important role in education. Indeed, ICT are considered as very useful pedagogic tools, and multimedia resources are constantly being created, updated and shared by university members worldwide. This paper deals with a case of study exploring the way in which the integration of ICT impacts learning in the context of a business management course at the Universitat de València (UV), in Spain. The results of the study point out the need for academic staff and students to acquire the appropriate knowledge and to develop the skills required for an efficient and effective use of ICT in higher education.
