Plant sterol oxides in functional beverages: Influence of matrix and storage

Three plant sterol (PS)-enriched beverages, milk based fruit juice (MFJPS), fruit juice (FJPS) and milk beverage (MPS), were stored at 4, 24, or 37 °C and analysed at regular time intervals of 2 months until 6 months. PS stability was analysed from the production of phytosterol oxidation products (POPs). The β-sitosterol oxides (7α/7β-hydroxy, β/α-epoxy, triol, and 7-keto) and campesterol oxides (β/α-epoxy, and 7-keto) were detected in all beverages and at all storage times and temperatures. High mammographic density (MD) is one of the main risk factors for development of breast cancer. To date, however, relatively few studies have evaluated the association between MD and diet. In BCR-ABL-positive cells, STAT-5 tyrosine-phosphorylation integrates signals induced by imatinib mesylate and Ara-C.

In BCR-ABL-positive cells, the transcription factor STAT-5 is constitutively activated by tyrosine phosphorylation. STAT-5 activation results in upregulation of bcl-X(L) and increased resistance to induction of apoptosis. Here, we investigated the effects of imatinib mesylate and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) on STAT-5 tyrosine-phosphorylation, cellular proliferation and induction of apoptosis in cell lines and primary hematopoietic cells. Imatinib mesylate treatment strongly suppressed STAT-5 tyrosine-phosphorylation in K562 and primary CML blasts. Evaluation of nutritional parameters in infant formulas and powdered milk by Raman spectroscopy

It has been made a critical evaluation of the application of near infrared Fourier transform-Raman spectroscopy for the simultaneous determination of the most important nutritional parameters such as energetic value, carbohydrate, protein and fat contents of infant formula and powdered milk samples based on the use of partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis. A highly heterogeneous population of 23 samples, covering a wide range of infant food formula and powdered milk, were obtained from the Spanish market. Antimicrobial susceptibility of nine udder pathogens recovered from bovine clinical mastitis milk in Europe 2015–2016: VetPath results

International audience; VetPath is an ongoing pan-European antimicrobial susceptibility monitoring programme collecting pathogens from diseased cattle, pigs and poultry not recently treated with antibiotics. Non-duplicate isolates (n = 1244) were obtained from cows with acute clinical mastitis in eight countries during 2015-2016 for centrally antimicrobial susceptibility testing according CLSI standards. Among Escherichia coli (n = 225), resistance was high to ampicillin and tetracycline, moderate to kanamycin and low to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and cefazolin. Calcium dialysability as an estimation of bioavailability in human milk, cow milk and infant formulas

Abstract The calcium dialysability of human milk, cow milk and infant formulas is estimated by applying the in vitro method (Miller, Schricker, Rasmussen, & Van Campen, (1981). American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 34, 2248–2256) slightly modified, as a measure of its bioavailability. The influence of the protein composition of infant formula samples on calcium bioavailability is also studied. Introduction: human milk (HM) is considered the best option for feeding healthy infants. Cholesterol (CHOL) is important for proper development of the nervous system, and for hormone and vitamin synthesis in growing infants. Breastfeeding and dietary CHOL intake during infancy have been suggested to affect blood lipid levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood.
