Electrochemistry of copper complexes with macrocyclic polyamines containing pyrazole units.

The voltammetric behaviour of bi- and mono-nuclear complexes formed in solution by Cu(2+) with three polyazacyclophanes containing pyrazole units in aqueous solution is described. Cyclic and square wave voltammetric responses at glassy carbon electrodes indicate that the reduction of copper-macrocycle complexes in solution takes place in two successive one-electron per Cu transfer processes coupled with preorganization and protonation reactions that mimic the behaviour of superoxide dismutase. Calculation of the relative basicities of methylamines in solution

Abstract The relative basicities in solution of the methylamines have been calculated using the model of Miertus, Scrocco and Tomasi to describe the solvent effect. The surface of the cavity is defined with the GEPOL method. The ab initio calculations have been performed using a 4-31G basis set. The relative order is reproduced using a combination of the gas-phase proton affinities obtained with quantum-mechanical methods by Eades, Weil, Dixon and Douglass and the solvation values obtained by us. The results seem to point out that the irregular order is not due to solvent but to basis-set effects.

Multi-proxy dating of Holocene maar lakes and Pleistocene dry maar sediments in the Eifel, Germany

Abstract During the last twelve years the ELSA Project (Eifel Laminated Sediment Archive) at Mainz University has drilled a total of about 52 cores from 27 maar lakes and filled-in maar basins in the Eifel/Germany. Dating has been completed for the Holocene cores using 6 different methods (210Pb and 137Cs activities, palynostratigraphy, event markers, varve counting, 14C). In general, the different methods consistently complement one another within error margins. Event correlation was used for relating typical lithological changes with historically known events such as the two major Holocene flood events at 1342 AD and ca 800 BC. International audience; BACKGROUND & AIMS: Helicobacter pylori-induced immune responses fail to eradicate the bacterium. Nitric oxide (NO) can kill H pylori. However, translation of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and NO generation by H pylori-stimulated macrophages is inhibited by the polyamine spermine derived from ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), and is dependent on availability of the iNOS substrate L-arginine (L-Arg). We determined if spermine inhibits iNOS-mediated immunity by reducing L-Arg uptake into macrophages. ZnSe single crystals, obtained by the Solid Phase Recrystallization (SPR) method under three different pressure conditions, 10 and 5 atm of Se, and 2 atm of argon, have been investigated by means of photoluminescence (PL) and optical microscopy. Special attention has been paid to the surface state of the samples. Samples recrystallized under 10 atm of Se present the best rate between the PL response for the excitonic zone and the deep level one that shows a clean PL emission without significant peaks and/or bands. Phonon coupling of non-bridging oxygen hole center with the silica environment: Temperature dependence of the 1.9 eV emission spectra

Abstract We report an experimental study on the shape of the 1.9 eV emission associated with non-bridging oxygen hole centers in silica and its temperature dependence, from 4 up to 300 K, under visible and ultraviolet excitation. Our analysis points out that these defects are coupled with their environment by phonons whose contribution can be described by the single mode of mean frequency between 300–400 cm −1 and Huang–Rhys factor of ∼3. On increasing the temperature, the luminescence intensity undergoes a thermal quenching caused by non-radiative processes, its deviation from a pure Arrhenius law can be accounted for by an uniform distribution of activation energy, from 0.002 to 0.05 eV. …

The effects of Pr3+ doping on the dielectric and photoluminescence properties of BaTi0.9(Yb0.5Nb0.5)0.1O3 ceramic

Abstract The praseodymium Pr3+ doped BaTi0.9(Yb0.5Nb0.5)0.1O3 (BTYN01) ceramic, under low concentration (0.1%), was prepared by a conventional ceramic fabrication technique and its phase structure, microstructure, dielectric, vibrational and photoluminescence (PL) properties was studied. Both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman studies confirmed the incorporation of Pr3+ into A-site lattice of BTYN01. The structure of Ba0.9985Pr0.001□0.0005Ti0.9(Yb0.5Nb0.5)0.1O3 (BTYN01-Pr) shows the coexistence of Pm 3 ¯ m -cubic symmetry (∼10%) and P4mm-tetragonal symmetry (∼90%) at room temperature. Irradiation induced Germanium Lone Pair Centers in Ge-doped Sol-gel SiO2: luminescence lifetime and temperature dependence

We studied the temperature dependence of the emission profile and of the lifetime, measured at 4.3 eV, related to the germanium lone pair centers (GLPC) induced by gamma ray at 5 MGy in a Ge-doped silica sample and in an analogous sample irradiated at 10 MGy, in which by a successive thermal treatment up to 415 °C the induced GLPC has been modified (named residual GLPC in the following). The measurements were recorded in the temperature range 10-300 K using an excitation of ∼5.2 eV. MBE growth and properties of low-density InAs/GaAs quantum dot structures.

We present the results of a comprehensive study carried out on morphological, structural and optical properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dot structures grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy. InAs quantum dots were deposited at low growth rate and high growth temperature and were capped with InGaAs upper confining layers. Owing to these particular design and growth parameters, quantum dot densities are in the order of 4-5x109 cm-2 with emission wavelengths ranging from 1.20 to 1.33 µm at 10 K, features that make these structures interesting for single-photon operation at telecom wavelength.
